I don't understand why the lake dropped so fast. Here it was Labor Day weekend and the water dropped like a bomb. We went ahead and took our boat and jet skis out. We beached the pontoon and now we can't move it. It is high and dry. Seems that the water is dropped every year like this. Why?

I just noticed at 8:10 P.M. there were 18 members and 122 guests on the board, total 140 present.

A quick count down the menu shows only 105 are actually VIEWING anything. If the other 35 are not here to view, they can't participate, so WHY ARE THEY HERE? Do they work for Homeland Security? Are they salesmen waiting for a break to introduce themselves? What do they have to hide? Did they get the wrong address and come here thinking this is a confessional? Are they registered or unregistered? ARE THESE ALL OF MONICA'S ALTER EGOS????

You never know. That was some wild stuff flying those big old bombers, from what I've heard. At 30,000 feet it can be anywhere from 30 to 50 degrees BELOW zero, and they did it with no pressurized cabins and no insulation and no armor in an aluminum box.

We wouldn't have won the war without them. These were heroes for sure.

Captain Worley
09-16-2005, 10:22 AM
If you ever get the pleasure of talking with a WWII vet, please do so. I've met a B-25 pilot and his stories of the war were quite interesting. You get a perspective that the history books don't give you.

Here's an example. I asked if he ever met up with a Me-262, Germany's first operation jet. he said he did, and the things were scary fast. He also said the front end of the plane was so jammed with weapons, that when the German pilot fired his guns, the muzzle lash would effectively make the plane disappear. It was frightening to the pilots to see a Me-262 disappear suddenly, because then he was aiming at YOU!

Thanks, guys. We owe you more than we know.

I didn't know that the Messerschmitt jet ever was actually used in combat.

There were actually two in combat use. The Me-262 reached combat units in August '44. It was ready for combat in '42, but Hitler insisted it be deployed a s a bomber. The redesign and another redesign for final use as a fighter took two years, and probably saved the war for the Allies.

The other jet was the Arardo Ar-234. It was a high speed reconnaisance, attack bomber. It was used to bomb the bridge at Remagen.

The NOH is wondeful, and is the only place this side of Greenville to get a decent show. They apparently draw from all over the place, because they sell out most of what they book.

I never figured out why Columbia can't have something like that. I always loved going to Township, which has the best acoustics in the city and is just the right size to bridge the gap between a club and a coliseum. It is big enough to keep ticket prices reasonable, and still intimate enough for the performers to work the audience.

I think Swampfox is right. Columbia doesn't support the arts unless they can get drunk while doing it. What a shame.

Safe trip and enjoy the show.

Why do you suppose that is? Especially when compared with other similar towns. I've never understood it.

cuebald

I think several things. First is venue. If a show comes to the Koger Center, it is usually priced out of the reach of most modest budgets in the area, and is attended by Those Who Wish To Be Seen.

Township seats between 3-4000, but I have been to a number of shows with a 40% butts to seats ratio. After all the fees are added on for the promoter and the band paid, he's lucky to get breakfast at IHOP for his trouble. That spreads in a hurry among those who bring the shows.

I really believe the other problem is with the venues who do have live music. Three Rivers is a musical Joke. The city is far more interested in selling bottled water at $3.00 a pop and beer at $4 and renting table space to people to sell their wares to really care whether anything is there worth hearing or not. Same with St. Patrick's Day in Five Points. It is promoted by the merchants, many of whom sell - guess what?

The Universalist Church Coffeehouse has booked some good entertainment from the Kerrville festival in the Austin area and a couple of the Northern and Western circuits, but is not large enough to get Big Name acts in for an evening. No alcohol, but also very few normally in attendance.

The individual clubs who offer music advertise themselves as places to drink that also have music (as an afterthought) rather than clubs such as the Handlebar in Greenville which advertises as a music venue (and by the way, we also sell alcohol).

The bigger question, and one that I am not certain I want an answer for, is whether there are enough people in Columbia with a Handlebar mindset as opposed to what we do see locally.

What's your take?

There are business who also financially support NOH. Tickets are around $35.00 a person. It is a very small auditorium and very personal. Most of the shows draw the older crowd (like me). I am way past the age of paying $100.00 or more to sit in a large stadium where drunks above me are dumping their beer on me. Same reason I don't care for car racing, USC football games, St. Patrick's Day @ 5 Points. BTW how is getting drunk with green beer a way to celebrate a saint? I just don't care to be around all that "crap". NOH will let you have a drink in their lobby. Usually a glass of wine or a bottled beer. But they will not let you take any food or drinks into the auditorium. Which is a great idea. The auditorium is clean. I have no fear of sitting in vomit or sticking to the floor.

NOH is a class act and deserves the business support it receives. I would imagine more than a few clients are entertained there at every show as an alternative to an overpriced dinner elsewhere. It also is certainly a place I would take someone for a celebration.

The Spartanburg Auditorium is another place worth going to for a show, but they don't book as often. Prices are usually @ $30-35, which is in line for a professional act. Many balk at the prices, but the cost of moving a show across the country is staggering. Most musicians in this country make less than an average factory worker, and with no benefits. It's a tough life.

Township in Columbia, again, is a great place to see a show, but promoters get cold feet after a few sparse audiences, and book the shows in Greenville, Charleston, Raleigh, or Athens where they will draw. I am with swampie. This is a college town, a state capital, there is plenty of business here, but with few exceptions, no booze, no audience. And it sucketh mightily, to the fourth generation.

swampfox
10-23-2005, 09:28 PM
Sure, if they can fill up the place at $35 / head, they'd be crazy to charge less in Newberry. But the prices have kept me from going there a number of times.

Of course I remember going to see Bob Dylan for $6.

I guess it would be an interesting thing to study why we got to be the "Give me beer or give me death" town while our neighbors didn't near as much.

Probably 'cause they get poked in the eye so much when the weather is nipply.

Ah... You ARE talking about poking the shorties with the stick and NOT about making boob kabobs, right

I try not to let short people get to close...They have a tendency to hike their legs on my ankles. I have had one or two to get stuck in the boobs. But they suffocated before I realized they were there...such a shame.

I like short people. They make good arm rests when you want to lean on something.

And if you can find one with a flat head, you have a place to sit your beer and ashtray.

If I can find any that's not dead already, I'll dye it.

Kind of like a suicide blonde.

I dug around and found three. That's a couple too few for a ducktail, and they're not close enough together to make a braid. Any suggestions?

Is there a cosmetologist in the house?

I love the gardens. I could stay in their gardens all day. In fact, my yard is landscaped much like their gardens. Overgrown! It gives a place for the knomes to hide and keeps the snipes safe.

Going to see Percy Sledge tonight at Newberry Opera house. If you've never been there check out. I believe the site is Newberryoperahouse.com or you can google it.

PERCY SLEDGE HAMMERS HOME THE HITS FOR BAPTIST CHILDREN`S

HOMES MAY 23 & 24 IN MAGGIE VALLEY NC

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Percy Sledge, known for his many hits including 'When A Man Loves a Woman' will be making his last stop in the US before his summer swing in Europe over in Maggie Valley at the acoustically perfect Eaglenest Entertainment Theatre on Friday and Saurday Night, May 23rd & 24th.

The Percy Sledge Show encourages all to bring a little extra to either or both shows to benefit Broyhill Baptist Childrens Homes as their representative will be on hand at both shows accepting donations.

"Eaglenest only has 796 seats and they are going fast with the Vettes in the Valley Corvette people coming to town, we have made arrangements to get 204 more into the theater and if we get can to that, I hope to make a substancial donation to BCH" said show promoter Duane Goins.

"This is not a festival or night club show, but a full blown concert in an alcohol free environment and Percy will be accompanied by a great band with real horns to get that famous sound."

"We hope to have local veterans from Waynesville present the colors before the show and we intend to recognize them and their military as they are the reason we can come together on occasions like this and still call the wars of the past ' foreign' wars.

Backed up by Stuart Virginias` Sunset Drive and their big horn style, & back up singers, its` ‘Tux After Seven’ for the 'Golden Voice of Soul' & this talented group of musicians that have performed with ‘The King of Slow Soul’ at Lincoln Center & Good Morning America.

They will play this last stop in the U S before a tour of The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, & Sweden. 'The Percy Sledge Show’ returns to the States in September at Los Angeles Sports Arena.

When ‘The Louisiana Legend’ takes to the stage, it will be a grand journey through all the hits that accompanied all the cruisers, young and old, down through the ages.

‘My Special Prayer’ ‘Cover Me’ ‘Take Time to Know Her’ ‘Warm & Tender Love’ ‘First You Cry’ ‘Dark End of The Street’

interspersed with his new music including

‘Big Blue Diamonds’ ‘24/7-365’ & ‘Shining through the Rain’

and his special tribute to all his friends with ‘My Girl’ 'Whiter Shade of Pale’ Sitting on The Dock of The Bay’ ‘Bring It on Home to Me’ ‘Going Home Tomorrow’ & ‘I Wish It Would Rain’.

With a sentimental trip through the hits & the years in a style that only Percy Sledge can take you on, when the time comes at the end of the evening, with everyone on their feet and the horns blowing hard, it will be time to take it all home with the most unforgettable live rendition of the timeless classic that has spanned the ages,

'When a Man Loves a Woman’, like only Percy Sledge can deliver.

You can say ”I was there” with my girl and my friends on a cool,

Magical NC Mountain Night in Maggie Valley.

Will you be one of the many that can say,"I was there"?

’Thanks and see you at the Percy Sledge show

"When a man loves a woman
Can't keep his mind on nothin' else
He just can't believe what a good thing he's found
If she's bad he can't see it
She can do no wrong
He'll turn his back on his best friend if he puts her down."

I read that when Percy recorded that song back in the day he really hated it, but when the royalty checks started coming in he changed his mind.

One of my favorite singers.

But please don't post the same thing on several threads. That is spamming on a board like this.
