I have asked numerious People about working with RCEMS, I am fairly new in EMS, Just an EMT. I am prior military. And I currently work Private service.
I have heard time and time again, all the war stories about RCEMS. Is it really that bad? Or are these people full of It?
I am looking to move away from Private ems (There is No future in it, unless you own it!) I am hoping to learn more about EMS and advance in ems.
So please someone tell me, Is RCEMS really that bad to work for? or is it just a paramilitary org. that Plain civilians are not used to?

RCEMS is actually a very good place to work now that a few bad apples are going,gone,retired... You will learn a tremendous amount in a short time. They have an IST program second to none with a very progressive med control. Their equipment is first rate, their organization has been honed over the years by trial and error until they got it right. The pay is great, though you will earn every penny you make.
People complain because you are policied to death(at times it seems like the micromanagement of the world), but if you just follow their rules they will allow you oppurtunities you wouldn't get elsewhere. Don't listen to the negative people. Jump in with both feet and form your own opinion about the place. Prior military background always seems to help in adapting to doing what you are told whenyou are told to do it.
You're right about convy being a dead end unless you own it. Get into the big leagues and then decide whether it is or isn't for you.

Dont listen to this crap pal. This is what they tell everone prior to making the next few years of their lives a living he11. I have been with richland for a while now and cant wait until i find a service that makes about the same money but knows the meaning of respect. DONT DO IT.

I speak as a veteran of RCEMS who has left for a slower service. RCEMS overall as an organization is great. They pay well (with annual raises for performance) and provide you with everything you need (uniforms, training, etc.) and then some.
With the sheer call volume you are bound to get some really intense calls. However, this call volume starts to break some people down after awhile. You will run WAY too many drunks and psych patients who just want to get off the street or avoid jail. This is mainly because upper management will not take a stand.
Movement up the chain can be very slow and you can plan on staying on the street at least 10 or 15 years. While 10 or 15 years in a slow service isnt bad, it is an eternity at a place with such a high call volume.
Overall, RCEMS is a great place to work, especially if you are young. But if you are one of us that is approaching middle age (despite the fact the I am in pretty good shape), the constant wear and tear of lifting will make itself known to you rather quickly.

does not matter where you work small minds are always on duty/
most ems people are drama queens by nature
sure is nice to see that RCEMS is just as bad as LCEMS and the pay is about the same

It's employees like YOU that make others not want to work for RCEMS, therefore making everyones job harder. If you are that unhappy, LEAVE, please! Your days are numbered anyhow!

RCEMS is a busy service, 30,000 plus callls a year. But it, like any other job, is what you make of it. Now that the pay has jumped up, the service as a whole will get better. Unhappy people will only tell you unhappy things.

raises effective immediatly, free uniforms, good people, not perfect, but they are constantly trying to improve. I love it. its all about serving the public anyway........just run the call

never said it was perfect, and its not up to me to decide who is worthy or sick enough to be transported, any way the "trolls" you refer to will eventually really need us, I can be patient. My focus is on me, and doing the best job I can do, not worrying about rumours or half truths.

I dont think anyone ever said Richland was the perfect job. EVERY job no matter where it is or what you do for a living has it's own pitfalls and problems. Every EMS service has it's good and bad employees. Every service has it's regulars or trolls. Every place you work seems to have it's Favorites.
The point is we got a big pay raise so we can hire GOOD QUALITY people and improve our service. Thats what it is all about IMPROVEMENT and at least we are trying. So if your interested in helping us do that and willing to work hard to achieve that goal then we will welcome you. If your just interested in money and are not willing to work to improve both yourself and the service just stay where you are
