Coroner?

Good question. Jimmy the Crotch thinks it's a law enforcement office. If nothing else, you can always get one to go in halves on a barbecue.

I truly am at a quandry as to what to think of our race for the Coroner's Office. This new Gentleman is nice enough but is not very personable and does not really appear to have a platform. On the other hand, our current Coroner appears to be running on a platform of we need to keep him because he and Metts make a good team. Though I am not sure if this represents what I would call a strong platform, it does raise questions about other topics on this forum, namely is there a true Good Ol' Boy system in Lexington County. I think most would agree that with the platform mentioned above, this statement was made by the Coroner at a meeting of the Women's Republican Club this past Monday night, that the system is alive and well. I question Harman's motives for all of a sudden going from a platform of relying on his experience, a platform that would appear advantagous, to "teaming" up with Metts. My question, is Harman weak and is hoping for support on a stronger Metts OR Metts is weak and is hoping for support from a stronger Harman? Regardless, I am leaning towards a vote for neither but a vote for change in our system. This Good Ol' Boy system may have made sense in the past, though doubtful, but I question the motives and intentions of these "public servants" in 2004!

On 05/04/04 I posted:

"For those that could not attend the May meeting of the Lexington County Republican Party missed out on truly understanding Metts' platform for his final campaign.....(Metts) raves on for some 4-5 minutes and tells us we need to vote for him because over the years a “team” has been developed between himself, Harry Harman and Donnie Meyers and electing someone else would ruin this “team”! The audience was stunned to learn that Metts was actually begging for votes on the backsides of Harman and Meyers!"

It would appear that the Metts/Harman/Myers team has suffered a loss and Myers has received the boot from the Good Ol' Boys? :axe: Run, Donnie, Run! :axe:

They may try to suck you back in for some help in this election!

It is my understanding that in the "good old days", Coroners were Funeral Home Directors naturally because of the business they were in. Due to the number of Funeral Homes it then became neccessary to hold elections, at some point in time it became a Constitutional office. A little known fact, the Cornoner is the only one that can arrest the Sheriff! :prayer:

Then somewbody needs to give the coroner a call about his barbeque buddy swiping signs. Don't trust any of them!

 Must SC Coroners be trained in investigation of death?
A few years ago the News networks ran several stories about how laws vary from State to State as does the ability to make factual findings of cause of death. In some States they put CSI to shame. Some have Coroners Investigators who process evidence from each death processing it to allow proper inclusion of information observed at the scene in the analysis and determination.
In other places the 'good old boys' wake the local undertaker up for
a "yep she's dead" finding. I planned on asking Harman these questions at his little get together advertised in last weeks Chronicle. Unfortunately I will be out of town. Perhaps someone out there can provide some insight. :?:

Why don't we have a medical examiner? Other places get the best medical science has to offer, but not our county. We have to foot the bill for a hospital full of doctors, any one of them better qualified than our coroner. Why do we have to settle for a nose picker? Well, he does give away barbeque around election time....

I think its a conflict of intrest for the now sitting coroner to also oqn one of the largest funeral homes in Lexington County.

I think we ought to start a write-in campaign. James R. Metts for Coroner! Yeah, that's the ticket! After all, he is a doctor ain't he? Just write old Jimmy's name in the space provided and stike a blow for Porky Pig! There ain't no free barbeque!!!

Actually Mr.Harmon does not "own" the funeral home, it is owned by a larger corporation. He merely runs the day to day operations at this point. Just thought you should know.

Thanks for the info guest, it may be true that a larger corp. owns the funeral home, but whos name is on the sign. Also the corp didnt come along and say hay harry how would you like to run a funeral home for us. He owned it first.

He doesnt even run the funeral home, he is just a figure head. However several of his deputies work at the funeral home and if the funeral home exceeds it's calls from the previous year they all get a bonus. Now that is ironic.

All deputy coroners are fully aware that promoting Caughman/Harman Funeral Home is unacceptable and grounds for termination. I would challenge anyone to present a citizen who can TRUTHFULLY say that one of Coroner Harman's deputies solicited business for Caughman/Harman funeral home. Coroner Harman runs a professional office dedicated to providing compassionate services to Lexington County residents.[/b]

The reason we elect as many positions is for the people to have a say on issues which affect them.

Ok so you die, the Coroner has to confirm how it happened and if (s)he feels the need to take a peek inside to see what happened then by law (s)he can. If it's me on the table I don't think I'll be in any position to complain one way or another.

How much does the coroner get paid? It would be interesting to see what a doctor would get paid if not for having to carry malpractice insurance.

Ok, but what do they say or advise? Are the undertakers on rotation like Body shops and car wrecks or is there a bunch of Business cards stuck to a cork board?

This is one morbidly interesting topic.
