Dogs, the best thing ever domesticated.

They will follow a trail for you.
Face a wild (or domestic) beast to protect you.
Forgive you for anything.
Pull a kid from the river.
Act as your burglar alarm.
Do what ever pleases you.
And more.

Show me a parrot, cat or anything that can fill their roll.

Dogs have lived with people for at least 50,000 years, according to the fossil records. We were made for each other.

All the dogs we had as a part of our family, I loved dearly. They are such loving, dedicated, sensitive and caring creatures. It seems to me that a dog's heart can be easily broken. How very sad it is when some people mistreat their pets. Dogs, most often than not...I think, possess unconditional love for their owners/family. I cannot bring myself to have another.... The loss is too great. I felt that way about cats, too, but my husband insisted that we have cats. I am grateful to him for that because I love them so very much.

I got this today...made me tear up a little. Thank God for my furry children.

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me.. It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.

10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

~Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them.

Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without God's critters.

As you know I grew up in a fishing village.

Some of the boats went out for ten days at a time, when they got in and unloaded the crew headed for the bars.

One of the cooks I knew would head home around 1 AM or so with his long haired Doxie on his arm and a bottle in the other hand~singing away, the dog would accompany him.
I guess you could call it a duet.

BTW, they got the dog loaded too. Beer.

Let me tell you all... I'm not sure that I consider our dog my best friend right now. One of our Huskies is getting spayed today so she had to stay inside last night (no food or water after 6, just had a bath... that kind of thing). She hates being inside and she cried and screamed and barked and scratched ALL NIGHT LONG. Between the pug in bed with us snoring louder than a freight train (he had to give up his "bedroom" so the Husky could stay inside) and the Husky having a cow in the kitchen we got no sleep last night.

The Story of A Dog Named Tank (http://seamonster02.wordpress.com/2009/08/20/the-story-of-a-dog-named-tank/)

Folks, this story is just that, a story. It can not be substantiated or verified because it is…what did I just say….a STORY. In the justice system a person is innocent until proven guilty – in the literary world, a story is fiction until proven by several sources to be real. I hope you enjoy this story, I thought it was touching and reminded me of my own dog, Baxter, and how we struggled the first few weeks I brought him home after he was abandoned by his previous owner. He had a lot of attachment and trust issues we had to work through.

The Story of Tank

They told me the big black Lab’s name was Reggie as I looked at him lying in his pen. the shelter was clean, no-kill, and the people really friendly. I’d only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the street.
But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog couldn’t hurt. Give me someone to talk to. And I had just seen Reggie’s advertisement on the local news. The shelter said they had received numerous calls right after, but they said the people who had come down to see him just didn’t look like “Lab people,” whatever that meant. They must’ve thought I did.
But at first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie and his things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all of which were brand new tennis balls, his dishes, and a sealed letter from his previous owner. See, Reggie and I didn’t really hit it off when we got home. We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe it was the fact that I was trying to adjust, too. Maybe we were too much alike.
For some reason, his stuff (except for the tennis balls – he wouldn’t go anywhere without two stuffed in his mouth) got tossed in with all of my other unpacked boxes. I guess I didn’t really think he’d need all his old stuff, that I’d get him new things once he settled in but it became pretty clear pretty soon that he wasn’t going to.
I tried the normal commands the shelter told me he knew, ones like “sit” and “stay” and “come” and “heel,” and he’d follow them – when he felt like it. He never really seemed to listen when I called his name – sure, he’d look in my direction after the fourth of fifth time I said it, but then he’d just go back to doing whatever. When I’d ask again, you could almost see him sigh and then grudgingly obey.
This just wasn’t going to work. He chewed a couple shoes and some unpacked boxes. I was a little too stern with him and he resented it, I could tell. The friction got so bad that I couldn’t wait for the two weeks to be up, and when it was, I was in full-on search mode for my cell phone amid all of my unpacked stuff. I remembered leaving it on the stack of boxes for the guest room, but I also mumbled, rather cynically, that the “damn dog probably hid it on me.”
Finally I found it, but before I could punch up the shelter’s number, I also found his pad and other toys from the shelter. I tossed the pad in Reggie’s direction and he snuffed it and wagged, some of the most enthusiasm I’d seen since bringing him home. But then I called, “Hey, Reggie, you like that? Come here and I’ll give you a treat.” Instead, he sort of glanced in my direction – maybe “glared” is more accurate – and then gave a discontented sigh and flopped down. With his back to me.
Well, that’s not going to do it either, I thought. And I punched the shelter phone number.
But I hung up when I saw the sealed envelope. I had completely forgotten about that, too. “Okay, Reggie,” I said out loud, “let’s see if your previous owner has any advice.”
To Whoever Gets My Dog: Well, I can’t say that I’m happy you’re reading this, a letter I told the shelter could only be opened by Reggie’s new owner. I’m not even happy writing it. If you’re reading this, it means I just got back from my last car ride with my Lab after dropping him off at the shelter. He knew something was different. I have packed up his pad and toys before and set them by the back door before a trip, but this time… it’s like he knew something was wrong. And something is wrong… which is why I have to go to try to make it right. So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bond with him and he with you
First, he loves tennis balls, the more the merrier. Sometimes I think he’s part squirrel, the way he hordes them. He usually always has two in his mouth, and he tries to get a third in there. Hasn’t done it yet. Doesn’t matter where you throw them, he’ll bound after it, so be careful – really don’t do it by any roads. I made that mistake once, and it almost cost him dearly
Next, commands. Maybe the shelter staff already told you, but I’ll go over them again: Reggie knows the obvious ones – “sit,” “stay,” “come,” “heel.” He knows hand signals: “back” to turn around and go back when you put your hand straight up; and “over” if you put your hand out right or left. “Shake” for shaking water off, and “paw” for a high-five. He does “down” when he feels like lying down – I bet you could work on that with him some more. He knows “ball” and “food” and “bone” and “treat” like nobody’s business.
I trained Reggie with small food treats. Nothing opens his ears like little pieces of hot dog. Feeding schedule: twice a day, once about seven in the morning, and again at six in the evening. Regular store-bought stuff; the shelter has the brand
He’s up on his shots. Call the clinic on 9th Street and update his info with yours; they’ll make sure to send you reminders for when he’s due. Be forewarned: Reggie hates the vet. Good luck getting him in the car – I don’t know how he knows when it’s time to go to the vet, but he knows
Finally, give him some time. I’ve never been married, so it’s only been Reggie and me for his whole life. He’s gone everywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can. He sits well in the backseat, and he doesn’t bark or complain. He just loves to be around people, and me most especially.
Which means that this transition is going to be hard, with him going to live with someone new. And that’s why I need to share one more bit of info with you….His name’s not Reggie. I don’t know what made me do it, but when I dropped him off at the shelter, I told them his name was Reggie. He’s a smart dog, he’ll get used to it and will respond to it, of that I have no doubt but I just couldn’t bear to give them his real name. For me to do that, it seemed so final, that handing him over to the shelter was as good as me admitting that I’d never see him again. And if I end up coming back, getting him, and tearing up this letter, it means everything’s fine.
But if someone else is reading it, well… well it means that his new owner should know his real name. It’ll help you bond with him. Who knows, maybe you’ll even notice a change in his demeanor if he’s been giving you problems.
His real name is Tank. Because that is what I drive.
Again, if you’re reading this and you’re from the area, maybe my name has been on the news. I told the shelter that they couldn’t make “Reggie” available for adoption until they received word from my company commander. See, my parents are gone, I have no siblings, no one I could’ve left Tank with… and it was my only real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq, that they make one phone call the the shelter… in the “event”… to tell them that Tank could be put up for adoption. Luckily, my colonel is a dog guy, too, and he knew where my platoon was headed. He said he’d do it personally. And if you’re reading this, then he made good on his word.
Well, this letter is getting too downright depressing, even though, frankly, I’m just writing it for my dog. I couldn’t imagine if I was writing it for a wife and kids and family. But still, Tank has been my family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been my family. And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family and that he will adjust and come to love you the same way he loved me.
That unconditional love from a dog is what I took with me to Iraq as an inspiration to do something selfless, to protect innocent people from those who would do terrible things… and to keep those terrible people from coming over here. If I had to give up Tank in order to do it, I am glad to have done so. He was my example of service and of love. I hope I honored him by my service to my country and comrades.
All right, that’s enough. I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at the shelter. I don’t think I’ll say another good-bye to Tank, though. I cried too much the first time. Maybe I’ll peek in on him and see if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth
Good luck with Tank. Give him a good home, and give him an extra kiss goodnight – every night – from me. Thank you, Paul Mallory
I folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope. Sure I had heard of Paul Mallory, everyone in town knew him, even new people like me. Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago and posthumously earning the Silver Star when he gave his life to save three buddies. Flags had been at half-mast all summer.
I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring at the dog. “Hey, Tank,” I said quietly. The dog’s head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyes bright. “C’mere boy.”
He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood floor. He sat in front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadn’t heard in months. “Tank,” I whispered. His tail swished.
I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time, his ears lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture relaxed as a wave of contentment just seemed to flood him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried my face into his scruff and hugged him.
“It’s me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me.”
Tank reached up and licked my cheek. “So whatdaya say we play some ball? His ears perked again. “Yeah? Ball? You like that? Ball?” Tank tore from my hands and disappeared in the next room.
And when he came back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth.

Here's what I know about ancient dog history.

There is archaeological evidence that humans and dogs have been living together for at least 50,000 years, which is about the time period that our ancestors had populated all of Europe, Asia, and Australia after leaving Africa.

The current scientific opinion is that the ancestor of today's domestic dog is the same as the ancestor of today's African wild dogs, which are pretty cool themselves. Of course they've always been able to interbreed with other wild canines, like wolves.

Probably they were first adopted by people to help with hunting, but creating new breeds started a very long time ago.

Whoever bred those tiny poodles is going to have a lot of questions to answer when the roll is called up yonder, IMHO.

Dingos are cool. They do occasionally kill people in Australia. For millions of years the only mammals in Australia were all marsupials (like kangaroos and koalas, carry their young in a pouch). When the more advanced placental mammals arrived (like the dingo, thousands of years ago, and humans for that matter) they started a process, killing off the marsupials. In several thousand more years they (the marsupials) will probably be all gone. Evolution at work.

Greatest of the Danes: Meet the New World's Tallest Dog

Wednesday February 24, 2010
http://z.about.com/d/weirdnews/1/0/X/Z/-/-/George_Tallest-Dog_170.jpgI was pretty broken up last year when the animal world lost one of the true giants, Gibson the Great Dane (http://weirdnews.about.com/b/2009/08/13/death-of-the-worlds-tallest-dog.htm).
Gib had been battling bone cancer, but before he passed on he managed to "write" a book and rub paws with Oprah, Jay Leno, Paris Hilton, and other alpha dogs.
Now, there's a new top dog: Giant George, a Great Dane who's not just the world's tallest dog, but the tallest dog ever measured in history, according to my friends at Guinness World Records (http://guinnessworldrecords.com/).
Gibson sleeps in his own queen-sized bed and goes through 110 pounds of dog food a month (http://www.aolnews.com/weird-news/article/great-dane-giant-george-sets-record-worlds-tallest-dog/19370097).
He's also got his own Web site (http://www.giantgeorge.com/), a Facebook fan club (http://www.facebook.com/GiantGeorge) and Twitter account (http://twitter.com/giantgeorgeaz). See George up close and other record holders in my special New World Records photo gallery (http://weirdnews.about.com/od/weirdphotos/ig/New-World-Records/).

October is Adopt-A-Dog Monthhttp://www.americanhumane.org/protecting-animals/special-events/adopt-a-dog-month/

What Can an Adopted Dog Bring to Your Life?

There are as many responses to that question as there are dogs in this world! That’s why -- during American Humane Association’s Adopt-A-Dog Month celebration in October -- we’re encouraging people to adopt a shelter dog and experience the joy of finding their own answers.
Are you looking for:

an exercise buddy?
a best friend and confidant for your child?
a dog you can train with to learn animal-assisted therapy?
a partner in agility competitions?
a constant companion for your favorite senior citizen?
a fuzzy face to greet you after a hard day at work?An adopted dog can be all these things -- and so much more!
Your local shelter is the perfect place to find dogs of every type, size, age and personality -- all waiting for a loving home. Or, if you prefer a particular breed that isn’t currently available at a shelter, go online to find a breed-specific rescue group in need of adopters like you.

Find out what a shelter or rescue dog can bring to your life this October during Adopt-A-Dog Month!

I was trying to find a link to research substantiating that owning a dog is good for your health and to my surprise, I was directed to a link for the cat and dog meat market in China...definitely not what I had in mind.

Well, this article, Pets Keep Us Healthy, is the closest I could locate at the moment.

Here are the top ten!

10. Date Magnets - Dogs are great for making connections. But not just love connections. A dog is a natural conversation starter. This can help ease people out of social isolation or shyness. People ask questions about the breed, or how you discipline them. Sometimes the conversation stays at the ‘dog level,’ sometimes it becomes a real social interchange.

9. Therapy – Horses have been used as therapy for children with autism and also stroke patients. Dog therapy has been successful for not only the blind in gaining their independence, but also for those with rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimers, even calming for AIDS patients.

8. Helps with ADHD – The whole process of keeping a pet and taking responsibility for something can help children with ADHD learn to plan and be responsible. Playing with pets allows better sleep (they get rid of excess energy) and they bond in an unconditional way so the child learns about self-esteem.

7. Helps Arthritis – People with arthritis are given the recommendation to stretch whenever they see their cat stretching to keep their joints lubricated. What a concept!

6. Improved Immunity – Some studies have shown that when children grow up with a dog or cat (or any large “furred” animals) they are actually less likely to develop allergies. They also were less likely to have eczema, a common allergy skin condition that causes red patches and itching. In addition, they had higher levels of some immune system chemicals — a sign of stronger immune system activation. Dogs are dirty animals, and this suggests that babies who have greater exposure to dirt and allergens develop a stronger immune system.

5. Decreases depression – Pets give us unconditional love, they listen to us. Petting an animal has been shown to have a calming effect. Also, taking care of an animal takes you out of yourself and gives you purpose. People with pets tend to have more interaction and less isolation than those without.

4. Lowers risk of dying – People with pets actually have less risk of dying of cardiac disease and strokes.

3. Lowers blood pressure – One study looked at 240 married couples and measured heart rates and blood pressures during cardiac stress tests. The pet owners had lower blood pressures and heart rates at rest and during the stress tests compared to non-pet owners. Also, children’s blood pressure has been shown to lower while petting a dog.

2. Mood enhancers – The most natural mood enhancer in the world, aside from physical activity comes from spending time with a dog or cat or even watching fish swim. Physical changes include lower cortisol and increased seratonin, both associated with a sense of well-being.

1. Physical fitness – In general, dog owners are more physically fit and less obese than those without dogs. Funny, how we seem to understand that dogs need exercise, but we don’t give ourselves the same consideration sometimes! This is a win-win situation.
