Homelessness for some maybe shocking to the eye; however, for many of us it’s as natural to our environment as trees, domesticated animals, & cable television. In Columbia, SC, a city experiencing an economic boom, it’s a sad reality of life. For the life of me I cannot understand how it persists on such a large scale. I guess it’s not profitable to assist our fellow man. There’s no money to be made in lifting our brothers & sisters out of their pools of despair.
What I find to be so astonishing about the homeless plague in Columbia is the fact that it is so visible & nothing is being done to curb this social illness. You’ll see people sleeping on the steps of city hall, on the terraces of the city’s churches, in the parking lots of the county library & main post office. You’ll see PEOPLE brushing their teeth with filthy water (usually sewage) on the grounds of the state capitol building. I know Mayor Bob Coble & Governor Sanford see it; for I know they are not blind. Where are the city’s resources going? Neither to the public schools nor to improving the quality of life for the city’s resident.
