Aiken (AP) -- A man injured in a South Carolina home invasion that left the homeowner dead has walked away from a hospital where he was being treated for his own injuries.

Multiple media outlets reported Monday that 40-year-old Terrance Riley walked away from the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta, Ga., over the weekend.

Aiken County Sheriff's Capt. Troy Elwell said Riley was allowed outside to smoke a cigarette and did not return. Elwell says Riley was shot three times and likely needs a wheelchair.

Authorities say Jerry Tyler was shot Friday after four men kicked in the door of his Aiken home. Deputies think all four men shot at Tyler, and Riley was wounded by a fellow robber.

The three uninjured men face charges of murder, first-degree burglary and attempted armed robbery.

Okay... so am I understanding this correctly? This guy is accused of 1st degree burglary, attempted armed robbery AND murder and he was allowed outside to smoke in the first place?

I think there may be some time off without pay involved....

I mean, this story seemed pretty straight forward at first... the guy escaped from the hospital. Then you read the rest of it and you see where he was allowed to go outside to smoke. I mean, hello... he was arrested for murder along with a string of other things. Did it not cross anyone's mind that maybe, oh... I don't know, he might try to run? This really isn't a slam on law enforcement... this is a slam on people just not using the sense God gave them.

Maybe someone got soft and thought it would be nice to let him have one last cigarette before going to prison. Dolt(s)! (meaning the one(s) who allowed him to escape)

I wondering if those guys are feeling all that good about their good deed now though... OR if they'll ever have the chance to make that mistake again.
