http://www.wyff4.com/news/18338804/detail.html

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Upstate Better Business Bureau (http://upstatesc.bbb.org/WWWRoot/SitePage.aspx?site=81&id=51abc5d1-c316-4559-b5bc-b4900042d3d1) has compiled a list of which types of Upstate companies have the most complaints made about them, and chances are, you won't be surprised which businesses made the most people angry.

The Upstate BBB said that cable and satellite companies got the most complaints -- 463.

BBB's Kathy Barrett said, "It is consistent. This category's always in the top 10 -- installation, repair, service, billing, problems with reception."
Collection agencies came in second, with 452 complaints.

"Threatening lawsuits or threatening to put them in jail," Barrett said. "Telling them they can do things they really can't do."

Used and new car dealers were third and fourth on the list with more than 300 complaints each.

Barrett said, "Dealers that have opened up and have gone out of business and have not paid off trade-ins. They have not followed through with contracts for consumers."

In fifth place were health clubs, with 178 complaints.

Barrett said, "Health clubs going out of business -- and they've taken money from consumers for an extended period of time. The contract may be for a year, and they paid up front for the whole year."

Car repair businesses, telephone companies, Internet commerce sites and sporting goods stores round out the top nine.

At No. 10 for 2008: Upstate restaurants that, as a group, received 82 complaints.

"It is very important for consumers to follow through so the company knows. If they don't know what the problem is, they can't fix it," Barrett said.
