Sorry, i realize that many folks don't read the local papers. The tobacco bowl was featured on the font pages of both of them. A group of businessmen apparently came up with the idea of naming the yearly rival game between Marion and Mullins the Tobacco bowl. According to the papers Anderson Brothers Bank is the sponsor and has bought a beautiful trophy. Each year the winner will keep the trophy for a year and return it for the following year's game. The paper further explained that the name Tobacco Bowl is an attempt to preserve and honor our county's heritage. To me it adds fun to the game.

Tobacco is a drug that causes cancer, has cost millions of people their lives and has cost this nation billions in health care costs. Thank goodness kids can no longer buy tobacco products legally but now we in Marion County are promoting tobacco products and the associated juvenile use by letting high school kids compete for the Tobacco Bowl. Even Nascar was smart enough to do away with tobacco as a sponsor. Colleges and Universities don't allow it. The NFL doesn't allow it. What are these insensitive and irresponsible businessmen thinking? Shame on them!

Tabacco was the plant that this county made a living on for many years. Just because they want to call it the Tabacco Bowl doesn't mean they're trying to sell the product. I don't see Marboro or Red Man in the title. I'm for one glad to see someone wanting to try and save something of our past. I'm tired of people like you jumping to negative thoughts when someone tries to do something good for a change.

You are obviously smoking something other than tobacco! LOL
I am the son of a tobacco farmer (a darn good one, too) so I am going to admit from the start that I am EXTREMELY biased on this subject:

Look, this area of the Pee Dee Region was built on a plant called, tobacco. For many generations, the economic center of this area was focused on and around tobacco. Tobacco was a word that meant economic prosperity and jobs for people of all walks of life.

A generation ago, you would have high schools start later in order to help the local farmers finish the tobacco season. This is because a lot of local teen-agers had JOBS helping those farmers and the teen-agers were not on the street as much like they are today. That is just one example of how tobacco had a positive impact on local economy and placing within the youth of Mullins a work ethic. Mullins (and Marion County) was built on the back of tobacco.

You call our businessmen "insensitive and irresponsible" for helping to promote something positive for an economically depressed community with a failing economic future. You owe those businessmen an apology.

I truly believe you will fail in your attempt to add the word, "tobacco," to the list of dirty words. You are obviously ignorant to the history of Marion County and the Pee Dee Region and I would encourage you to visit one of the local libraries and study our heritage and history. Thank you.

I grew up on a tobacco farm seaward of the Pee Dee. Although I recognize the dangers associated with smoking I will always be grateful for the cultural, family-working-together aspect of the way I grew up. Many times I climbed the tier poles in a completely dark barn, long before sunrise, so we could empty it in order to fill it up again that same day. And to those who haven't smelled it, fresh-cured tobacco has got to be one of the most beautiful smells in the world.

I recently got a new book about the history of this very subject, titled Long Green: The Rise and Fall of Tobacco in South Carolina, by Eldred E. Prince, Jr., put out by the University of Georgia Press. It's available on Amazon. Just glancing through it so far it seems to be very well done.

Nobody will have that life again. I hope that it is not forgotten.

I also grew up working on the family farm, which consisted mostly of tobacco....yet I didn't smoke then and I still don't. I don't think the "Tobacco Bowl" is gonna cause any kid to run out and light up! I think it is meant to be a tribute to our county's heritage... most of us who grew up around here can in some way relate to tobacco farming. It was a way of life and how farmers provided for their families and contributed to the county's economy (in those days, they "went to town" to shop once a week). So I say, bring on the "Tobacco Bowl" GO SWAMP FOXES!!!

I understand both sides here. Those who question this method of honoring our county's tobacco heritage have a point, there are many morre appropriate ways to honor our county's heritage than by sponsoring a youth sporting event with tobacco or liquor or any other vice. I dont believe the NCAA would sponsor a Tobacco Bowl. While some are questioning the political correctness, it really isn't a big deal and is not going to cause any kids to chew or light up that aren't already inclinded to do so. Focus on the football and Let It Be.

Sorry if I'm wrong, but it sounds to me like you're taking the good doc's side. The name is Tobacco Bowl not Marboro Bowl or Red Man Bowl. That is a sponsor my friend.

I get sick and tired of so many people b..... about stupid stuff. Mullins has a long history based on tobacco. It is what it is. Our energy needs to focus on the upcoming election and the economy. Just let the game be played as is our tradition and if it is called the tobacco bowl so be it. It is not hurting anyone. I grew up watching all kinds of things on tv but my parents taught me right from wrong. They taught me what was good for me and bad for me. After that it is up to each individual as to what they chose.
