View Full Version : Ranking County council

It would be interesting to see how our viewers on this board would rank the effectiveness of County council members on a 1- 5 basis. 1 Being least effective
Eloise Rogers - 4 - For standing up for Pee Dee Community Fire Department and Marion Rural Fire Department during her last term. I rank this for her actions for the two volunteer departments in her district. For other topics, I do not know her views or actions, my bad for not being more interactive and attending council meetings and 'watching' our council at work.

A minus 1 across the board for doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to promote economic growth. They are either clueless or could care less about the hardships their lack of leadership is causing the citizens of this county and the pace at which this county is falling further and further behind our neighboring counties. What a shame and disgrace. This county will be a ghost town before long if they don't quit making excuses and start taking action to make some positive things happen here.

No , i do not hold a public office.
So what if someone does or did hold a public office? :-) If I were in a position of public office then I would be very attentive to what was on this web page.
Are public officials not supposed to have their finger on the pulse of the community, after all? ;-)
Bigfish, just wondering if any of the county politicians are the 'guest' visiting the site. If you notice the site is getting visited quit a bit, but some don't participate. FF2

You would be surprised who is viewing this site! At first, the site was ridiculed by certain "powers-that-be" but that was due to the fact those same "powers-that-be" were running scared from this site! LOL!
Seriously, I truly hope that anyone that views this site in any position of power will listen to what the constituents are saying. I would if I wanted to keep my voted-in job!
If you need a great example of what I am speaking of then look at the Sheriff's thread.....and just how close was that election? ;-) Tenney, at the time, was a virtual unknown but he gave Mark a run for his money, didn't he? Mark Richardson will be very wise to read and take in what his constituents have said on that thread. There is such a thing as constructive criticism and a wise man listens to it.
"We voted you into this job and we can vote you out!" -BigFish

Fish, don't know what election results you looked at but considering the racial numbers of this county, Mark Richardson won by a huge landslide, much wider margin than ANYONE expected!
Quoted from SCNow.com:
"In unofficial results released by the Marion County Voters Registration and Election Commission, Mark Richardson was re-elected as the Marion County Sheriff, when he took 4,233 votes to his challenger’s, Dewayne Tennie, 3,660 votes."
Let's see...
4,233
-3,660
-------
= 573
Where is your "huge landslide?"
By the way, I understand this was the "unofficial news report" but I do not see the official reports having any "huge" difference. I am sorry but you cannot argue with figures!

Fish, if you had ANY understanding whatsoever of Marion County politics, you would agree a 573 vote victory by ANY white candidate over ANY black candidate is a HUGE victory. Now you can say it shouldn't be that way and I agree, but reality is what it is. This was a much bigger margin than any INFORMED observer would have ever guessed.

We all have personal opinions but needless to say do we try and make it this personal on a web board? Come on people you need to worry about the current issues at hand instead of being concerned with someone you dont like. These threads are here to try and help our communities. And by the way if someone has the balls to run for any public office, then they are better than most!!!!!!!!!!!

If county council hired an economic development director rather than leaving the job vacant since last year, maybe they could "somehow bring more jobs into the area." Bringing more jobs to the area is the primary purpose of an economic develpment director and county council doesn't see the need to fill the job??? Duh? Opportunity is knocking and nobody is home in Marion County.

Where are the new jobs?
If it were not for the small business owners then Marion County would have no economic chance at all.

To do this, it would take the county council actually taking action!
The first step the county council needs to take is to hire an Economic Development Director since that job has been apparently vacant for a year. Oh, and hire someone qualified for the job, please!
What? Nobody wants that job?

Yeah, I get what you mean. There is not even any type of "debate" on the subject between council members when it comes down to filling the position. Why? They obviously do not want to fill the position.
Marion County must not have the funds for that.

Your right goldfish, it is what it is. We all need to look back at the councils progress when election time comes around. Its time for a change.
I have to agree with infamous1 on one thing, the county does need a change in pay. This is for all county depts. Police, Ems, Sanitation, General Workers, etc...because these people take care of the county. They should have a little more incentive to come to work besides insurance and retirement.

Then I move that the county and city law enforcement officers get an increase in pay. For what those guys go through to make a living, I believe it would be a wise investment! And do not forget the fire fighters!
Seriously, these are the guys that put themselves in harm's way every day they are on the job.

Whether it's employee moral, economic development, our school system or a host of other important issues, obvious there's no plan in Marion County, no vision from our leaders, no big picture approach to moving this county from the bottom of the barrel, it's just a day to day survival approach. It's a serious lack of leadership from our county council and our school board. Seems they are looking for places to put blame to save their own face rather than finding real solutions. Until the voters demand more from our elected officials, it will always be that way.

First off much respect to law enforcement. The 2 bucks an hour overtime is not worth your lives.
Second the EMS pay scale is way outdated. Our senior employees salaries are less than starting pay at other services. Let me break it down for you.............Law Enforcement, Marion Counties Finest.
Fire Fighters, Marion Counties Bravest.
EMS, Marion Counties Poorest.
To us CPR means Can't Pay Rent....

You are so right! "Who wants higher taxes?" I have heard that question used before by County Council members in the recent past in order to scare constituents into silence on particular issues.
Well, there is an open slot for Marion County Economic Developer. Since Marion County has not filled that position in a year's time (and does not plan to) then that money should be moved over to benefit Marion County's public safety officers. Makes sense, doesn't it?
I would rather the county give the benefits to the public safety officers versus another made-up job for another "suit" any day of the week!
Yeah, I know that this is not the answer you are looking for but I hope you see the point I am trying to make here.
Maybe Marion County can do better for these guys than having the ones that protect us being forced to make "Chinese Overtime" (if that is really true, yet I tend to believe it). I mean, how bad do you want to poop in face of those that protect you?

You are exactly right! The two job areas that the citizens of Marion County rely on the most also receive the least pay.
I am curious about something here ,though.
Does the "Chinese Overtime" only apply to Marion County Law Enforcement or does it apply to Marion County EMS also?
I am asking this question out of nothing more than ignorance of the facts.
I still cannot (and will never) understand how an entity of ANY type is allowed to pay $2 per hour OVERTIME! Do I need to go back and re-read the Fair Labor Standards Act? What did I miss?

Chinese Overtime works like this:
Net Hours get paid regular salary. The first ten hours of overtime is half of the regular salary. The second ten hours of overtime is half of that half. And then so on. So now you know that eventually you can be working for nothing. The Sheriff's Office is the only agency in the county that makes Chinese overtime. EMS makes time and a half.

This is very true! The Sheriff has nothing to do with how the deputys get paid because he reports to a County Council. The only thing the Sheriff brings the County Council each year is a budget request and it is up to Council to approve (or disapprove) certain requested items. Other than that, the Sheriff's hands are tied. You cannot blame the Sheriff. The County Council obviously implemented this "Chinese Overtime" idea and it is a dumb one, for sure!
