SC trooper hit with civil rights charges
http://www.thestate.com/local/story/463918.html
Trp.John B. Sawyer is charged with violating the civil rights of Sergio Cardini, said U.S. Attorney Walt Wilkins.
Cardini had just led police on a chase down I-95.
What about the rights of the several Law Enforcement Officers and innocent civilians as this perp was driving at high speeds trying to duck and dodge the Officers?
What about these officers killed for the same kind of recklessness (sp)?
Deputy John Mark Dial

Looked reasonable to me. The guy was already on the ground but he had not been secured (cuffed). I think I would have done the same after such a chase. I would have assumed that he presented a danger after a chase like that.
I wonder what they heck the guy was thinking trying to run from so many cop cars in a rig like that.

The State newspaper of Columbia reported Wednesday the lawsuit filed by Sergio Caridi in Florence states he suffered "significant physical injuries" in his arrest on various traffic-related offenses in 2006. He's awaiting trial.
The people that he almost killed while running from the Troopers should sue this idiot for endangering their lives.

The SCHP is going down the drain fast. Talk to a trooper friend of mine today. stated that all he is doing is working the wrecks he is given. Stated he is afraid that if he does his job and has to fight some one he will get no backing. This is a pitty that these officers have to work for sutch ******s do not have balls to back there people.

Baby slapped: Day-care operator gets no jail
http://www.thestate.com/local/story/615336.html
former Summit neighborhood day care operator accused of slapping a baby girl hard enough to cause bleeding on her brain pleaded guilty Monday to a felony child abuse charge.
But Circuit Judge Kenneth Goode gave Talisha Lavette Smith no prison time — a ruling that angered the infant’s parents, Patrick and Michelle Gaddie.
What the hell is wrong with our justice system?????
If this had been my child with a ruling such as this, they would have to put me in jail!!

This is one of those times when people in other places gather in front of the court house and refuse to be moved. This is outrageous.

I was a witness in Judge Goode's court some years ago with a case just as horrific. He made the exact same ruling. Perhaps all the outrage expressed on this thread could be re-directed to some of us volunteering in child oriented programs - Big Brother, Big Sister, mentor programs, Guardians ad Litem and lots of others.

Was it the one where the kids were living in a car full of filth and had ingested cocaine?
He gave those sorry excuses of parents FIVE YEARS. And I'm sorry, but NO amount of volunteer work is going to cause people to become good parents, nor will it cause a judge to hand down fair sentencing.

That stuff is nice, Lakal, and I'm really glad people do it, but in my experience, the environment the child is in pretty much overwhelms any attempt by society so set the child on the right track. Sorry to be a downer, but that's the way I see it.
There should be a program for adults similar to this one for kids to set them straight.
http://www.rcsd.net/prog/crossroads.htm
The "Crossroads Tour” is designed to give our youth a "reality check" by having deputies and deputy coroners meet with the kids and talk with them about their future. The kids will also tour the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and have a Real Talk Session and round table discussions about where their lives are headed. The “Crossroads Tour” comes on the heels of the training that School Resource Officers teach (Law Related Education) during the school year about issues that could lead a person to jail and shows them the harsh reality of jail life and where bad decisions can lead them.

No, it was another case. A parent lost their temper with an infant only a few weeks old. The child was beaten so badly it nearly died and is, today, severely disabled. Dad got five years probabation. At the time, I thought it was because the family hired a very high profile attorney to defend the Dad but it appears this sentencing is typical of Judge Goode.
I don't suggest volunteer work will cure all child abuse but it's more productive than doing nothing and I can testify that I've seen lots of changes for the good for many, many families.

I am so sad that you see it this way Captain. Clearly all the ills of child abuse are not going to be solved by volunteers. But, if one child or one family is helped then isn't it worth the effort? I could inundate you with facts about this but I think the following old story best describes how I feel.
Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.
One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.
As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.
He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"
The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."
"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.
To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."
Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"
At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one."
My own experience is that volunteers DO make a difference, a significant difference. It's never enough, of course, but our children need us. We must try. It's not "nice", Cappy, it's "down and dirty" but it's needed.
