City of Nichols Part-time Law Enforcement Protection

Here is one for ya...

The City of Nichols and other small Marion County communities have very little or no police protection during the night. I will list the obvious "ala Govman:"
(a) Thank you NAFTA! Industry is gone south (literally) and the town of Nichols cannot afford but part-time policemen.
(b) The Sheriff cannot be blamed for low staffing due to the fact that his superiors let him know how much money he will recieve to run the department.
(c) Would it not be a good idea to have the Sheriff's Department step in and patrol the town of Nichols when the town has no policeman on duty? And, does that fall in the Sheriff's Department's jurisdiction?
(d) If the town of Nichols is unable to staff full-time police officers then what should Marion County do to remedy the situation?

Maybe Town of Nichols should consider unincorporating and then law enforcement would be county responsibility. Maybe you could get county council to fund a Sheriff substation in your existing police station. Do you guys have a water and sewer system? If so, maybe GSWSA could take that over for you like they are proposing to do in Sellers. Community of Nichols may be happier than Town of Nichols. It's hard for small declining towns to provide many services. Of course, Marion County is no cash cow either so you may be trading a goat for another goat. Maybe, maybe, maybe....food for thought?

Nichols isn't the only town in this community with that trouble. Had a fire the other day on 301 during the day. Due to the traffic, we asked dispatch to call the Sellers officer to come help us with traffic controll. She reported back to us that he wasn't on duty. We need factories badly to help our economy around here.

You may be right about the goat analogy.

Marion County was (or is) hard-pressed to satisfy the communities of Gresham and Britton's Neck with proper ambulance coverage per what I have read in the Star/Enterprise the past few years.

The more I ponder this Nichols law enforcement debacle I have concluded that the county is unable to take on the load of the lack of Nichols law enforcement. After all, if Marion County had so much trouble staffing one ambulance in the Britton's Neck/Gresham areas then imagine the county handling this solution!

Maybe Nichols should bring in Pinkerton Detectives?!?!? LOL!!!

The way I understand it, years ago Horry County was thinking of trying to annex in Nichols and there was a huge dispute over it and it fell through. If things get bad enough, does anyone think that they may try again?

What town isn't close to bankrupt right now? Nichols does not have a lot of income coming in, that is no secret to anyone. Horry County did try to annex back in the 90's, but Marion County stopped it. Truth of the matter is the 29581 zip code has more area in Horry County than Marion County. They even debated moving the post office from Nichols out to Mt. Olive area some time back. The 29581 zip code also extends into Dillon County in a very small area and at one time there were a few addresses off of Hwy 76 in North Carolina that were labeled as Nichols, NC but the zip code was different. I don'y know if they are still that way.

I would love to see Horry County annex Nichols in but I guess my opinion is kind of biased in a way.

How true!!! The Sunny Mart does seem to be the melting pot of Nichols right now. If the old Burger House was to reincarnate itself, I would definately spend more money in Nichols. Remember the good ole days. Those were the best burgers and ice cream in the County.

I have to give credit where credit is due. The Town of Nichols has hired another police officer and I believe this would remedy the issue of part-time law enforcement.

I guess you are talking about his ex-wife? I have kids in the afternoon program where she works and her attitude sucks. She acts more like a child than the kids do. She has a very snappy personality and really doesn't need that job. As far as the male side-kick, I'm not sure who you are talking about. I know that Fish has several friends and i see him out and about with alot of people, so I am dumb-founded on that one. I do think that he would do a great job and this county certainly needs new leadership. That's just my opinion.
