Thanks to the administrator, Marion County now has a voice. I look forward to future post from Marion County residents and our neighbors from the extremely popular 'Friends of Dillon County' site

Does anybody have any comments on Marion County's Entertainment Complex? I think it has been a big disappointment to local residents. To my knowledge it has not benefited the county in any way. I haven't heard of any contributions they've made to the community. A few months back there was much controversy about their intentions to bring Bingo to the complex. There was some in favor but there appeared to be an overwhelmingly spirit of opposition. They have an upcoming concert and I sure hope it does well. I think there's probably a lot riding on it

I heard that at least a few people now "sleep with the fishes" over the bingo thing.

I had high hopes for the Giant Whack-a-Mole.

In the case of the Marion County Entertainment Complex there is a familiar saying that comes to mind. That saying is, "patience is a great virtue." With that being said, I am patiently waiting for positive results.
This incarnation of the Entertainment Complex seems pleasantly different than the apparent first incarnation which screamed "scam" to many people in the community.....and it was a scam.
With the understanding that hope floats, I have hope that the guys running the Entertainment Complex now will do their best to get things right. These same guys should also know that, unfortunately, Marion County is proudly thirty years behind the rest of the world. Any potential positive change in Marion County always comes with severe kicking and screaming of the "old guard." These backward-thinking residents of the county should understand that change is good.....if not controversial. Controversy always makes life more interesting after all....LOL!
After all, NAFTA sucked out our textile plants (Ross Perot was correct, by the way) and the tobacco market is all but obsolete so, logically, Marion County is quickly running out of options.
Add to that, is the truth that LBJ's "Great Society" experiment seemingly was centered in Marion County and the "Great Society" idea failed miserably. Just look at the "project problem" the community is faced with as all of the proof people need for that argument.
Those points, coupled with a long-failing public school system with no hope of improvement, unfortunately makes things pretty bleak for this area.
Like I mentioned before....hope floats.
Any ideas?

We used to sell tobacco in Mullins. I loved sleeping on the piles of tobacco on the night before the auction.

If you've never smelled fresh cured tobacco, you've missed a treat. Nothing at all like any tobacco products you can buy. It's like perfume.

The best thing about smelling cured tobacco was the fact that you had finished the 'putting in' process.

I was born and raised here in Marion. I love this place but I'm not sure if I want to stay anymore. I think that the entainment complex is a big joke. There was a show set once where no one, even the artist, didn't show up. Come to find out, the artist called and said that he was going to stay at the beach. The complex is a good idea but not in Marion. Why would anyone want to stop in Marion when the beach is just a few more miles down the road. As for the bingo hall, LOL. I was there at the county council meeting when they voted for it. They said it would bring jobs to Marion. HELLO!!!!!!!!!!! 5 jobs over 150 or more. Let's do the math people. The factories around here helped build Marion and you would rather put money into a gambling hall?? I guess it's just better this way in their eyes, "Let's put more of a strain on the tax payers". I want some of that smoke they're crackin'.

I can't wait to see what happens when I 73 comes through here. Let's have some tourist traps and no plants and factories to better the economy. That's about all the complex is. Can you believe that there was talk about maybe even having a water park out in the area of the complex.

I believe the water park was a smoke screen to appease the locals and get our minds off the bingo which I believe has been on their minds for some time. Excuse my terminology but it's a case of outsiders coming in to rape our local way of living. For decades our small towns have suffered somewhat financially but our wholesome lifestyle has always been a draw and protected by good families. Bingo and like activities will jeopardize that all.

Has anyone been to TIO's on main street Marion? It’s supposed to be an authentic Mexican restaurant. Just curious what's it's like.

Nah, but the Mexican resaurant in Mullins is good. It is located at the K&M Shopping Center close to Bravo's.
