All you have to do is put an application in at the police department and specify that you want to be a researve police officer on it.

Yeah, well, thats when andy was there. Now that Brian Buck is the acting chief..you shouldnt have a problem..I would call and ask for my application to be re-activated.

The Irmo PD has a limit to the number of reserves they can suppport I know. They've got a least 5 that I know of. I think the PD has to supply all the equipment with the exception of the duty belt. Not sure about the pistol weapon. I think the biggest thing is their budget in supplying or buying new euipment to reserves.
I would still suggest going by in person to talk with the new Chief. He's a good guy !

If I have a criminal record, can I still be a police officer with Irmo? The offense happened in 2000 and I was convicted in Dutch Fork Magistrates court.

Unless it was a minor traffic violation, then no you can't be a police officer anywhere.

Why is Courtney Dennis a police officer with the town of Irmo??? In 2000 he was convicted of the criminal offense of Negligent Operation of a Boat in Dutch Fork Magistrate's court. This offense carries a penalty of up to 30 days in jail. And I don't know if he may have other convictions, this is just the one I know of after checking one site(richlandonline.com).

I believe the law basically says that if what you are charged with carries a sentence of at least one year you cannot become a certified law enforcement officer. That was considered a minor charge apparently.
Other 30 Day Offenses-
Speeding (starting at 1 mph over the speed limit), Loud Music, Failing to Return Rented Videos, and- in some cities- No Light on a Bicycle at Night
