What is the deal with the ordinance violation ticket fines being so extremely high? Is it really necessary to fine someone $1000 for parking in a fire zone? While I certainly understand the need to ticket individuals, I certainly cannot agree its proper to fine someone the maximum fine. Where is "Mercy" in the courts these days? Shame on our senators for appointing these judges....after all, we elect them.

They have to make the fines high so that people will finally start paying attention to them. showing "mercy" in the past has made it too easy for repeat offenders to pay up and do it all over again.

If they gave out prison sentences for parking in the fire zone, do you think people would still park there? I doubt it. So it's all a matter of making the risk high enough that a reasonable person would not want to take that risk.

Reminds me again of the penalties for drunk driving in most European countries. You lose your license on the spot. If convicted, you can apply to get it back in a few years. AND there is a fine equal to about half a year's pay for the average person. The result? Drunk driving is almost non-existent. Imagine how many lives that saves. We should do at least as much here.

Maybe we think that it's some kind of right to drive drunk. That would make us a bunch of fools for sure, wouldn't it?

At least Richland County judges know what they are doing, that is more I can for Lexington. Judge Morgan is a joke and lets the attorney's run his court room.
