View Full Version : Drunk driving

Friday night I almost lost my nephew and his girlfriend to drunk driving. It hurts to say it, but it was my nephew doing the drunk driving. He is 19.

He just ran off the road. No other car. No seat belts either. By the grace of God he hit a couple of little trees before hitting the big one. Otherwise we would probably be planning a funeral right now. Maybe two.

I want to know how he got the alcohol. I don't know what I'll do when I find out.

We have absolutely got to make drunk driving such an expensive proposition, in penalties, loss of license, and money, that most people will stop doing it. I have seen, with my own eyes, this strategy working in other countries. I have always believed that the reason we can't get tougher laws here is because so many of our legislators feel that drunk driving is an inalienable right, and that many of them do it themselves on a regular basis.

So we've got to make it too expensive for them to carry on this way. If they won't give us tougher laws, then let's get rid of them. Let's make it a major campaign issue. The other option is just costing us in ways that are difficult to express.

I don't know what I'll say when I go talk with him. I don't know what his mother, my sister, will say. But I want to make this as painful for him as possible. If he has to ride a bicycle to work for a few years, rain or shine, that will be only a tiny part of the pain. To do otherwise would be irresponsible to me as an uncle who loves this kid. Of course I can only suggest. He has parents.

If you have kids form a meaningful relationship with them right now or else declare yourself incompetent. The alternative is just unthinkable.

I personally have had enough dead kids for one week.

Feel free to call me if you get tired of kicking his butt. I'll be happy to take over.

If you had the opportunity to face me you wouldn't open your inbred mouth to one of your betters, even if you could switch names in person like you can on this board and even if your whole inbred family was watching your back.

But I won't give you that opportunity. You'll die wishing for it. And so will your inbred friends.

What's a FU? Is there something that your inbred mind is having trouble putting into words?

You do know that you're attempting to address a person of quality, don't you? You don't have permission for that. Your DNA is not sufficient for it.

You may ask for permission but it will be denied. Same goes for your entire (inbred) family and your whole (inbred) community. Surely there is a trailer that you could be tying down instead of wasting time trying to communicate.

Don't make it worse on yourself, boy. Do you know that it would not even be illegal in this state to do you grievous physical harm? I don't think that you could even legally be housed within city limits.

I imagine that you have your own inbred children by now. At least have them neutered so that this terrible cycle can end. Consider this to be professional advice.

I swear, some people don't have a home-raisin'.

Some don't even have the raisins you can buy at the store.

Notice how the golden raisins are getting to be harder to find?

Swampy,
Glad to hear your nephew and girl friend are okay. In my past life I had the unfortunate position to witness the aftermath of drunk driving. Most of the victims were the innocent, the "other driver." I agree our state legislators, and some of society, condone drinking because ‘we all have done it’ mentality.

Most people are not given a second chance, your nephew is one of the lucky ones. I hope he takes this potential life-ending act and learns from it. Good luck!

I lost my best friend in 1994. He was on a motorcycle and was run over by a drunk driver. Sunday marks 14 years that I have gone without a joke and that room-warming smile.

Kronos - good response which I echo. Good luck SF to you and yours.

Golden raisins are sulfured - which is why they keep their golden color. Sulfur isn't really good for you, so don't eat too many.

And crappy weather in CA has slowed down the raisin crop...

And speaking of raisins... does anyone remember the Carol Burnett miniseries "Fresno" ?!?

I have a copy.

It's still hilarious.

Thanks, friends. I am grateful most of all that he and his now-former girlfriend are alive and relatively well. (I don't blame her for dropping him.) I have to believe that he will learn from this one because I know we usually don't get this lucky twice. I don't know how much to hug him and how much to kick his behind.

He pleaded no contest to felony DUI by the way. The judge would not allow a lesser plea, and I don't blame him. Got a big fine, has to go to DUI classes and no license for six months. Talk about getting off easy.

A felony conviction at 19. Hard to imagine.

Now I have a quandry. I know who gave him the drinks, at least by name. He has not been charged yet, but I won't be satisfied until he does.

Speaking of Fresno, the miniseries, I got it on DVD! A friend got it for me not long ago. It's just as much fun as it was back then.

If you don't remember "Fresno", you are decidedly too young to participate in this forum.

This conversation is for adults, not pretenders and wannabes.

I'll have to look into getting a copy of Fresno for the wife. She loves Carol Burnette. Thanks for the heads up!

Get her the "Reunion" show while you're at it. It is a scream, especially some of the Tim Conway ad lib stuff.

My favorite is his story about the siamese elephants. the first time I saw it I almost quit breathing from laughing so hard, and the other cast members were affected the same way.

Yes, little one, that DOES include you.

Go ride your bike or something for a little while. We'll call you when we're through talking.

Two Notch Road, 7400 block: A man was arrested at 5:30 p.m. Friday after police spotted him drinking a beer while driving. A report said the 46-year-old man saw the officers as they pulled up beside his car but he never tried to hide the beer. He took sips with the deputies looking on and told them he had more in the cooler.
