you are not learning, yet. taxes here are a joke and that's why so many people retire here. my parents taxes on their 1600sf home in NY were over $5000/yrly. they now live in a 3600sf home in Irmo and because of all the incentives, their taxes are under $1000. why wouldn't someone move here?
people are on here daily slamming the emergency services, as if it is only the fault of the employees when bad things happen. well, their budgets are derived from tax dollars. the less you pay, the less you will get in return. so remember the next time a tax increase is voted on and you say"wahhh, my taxes are high enough now!" when you need the police, fire, or ambulance that might have been funded by that increase, don't take it out on them. it's just as much your fault as it is anyone else's.
a tax increase is not always a bad thing.

I agree with stoptax.org because I don't like paying property taxes every year on something I'm supposed to own, especially my car. I paid my car off, but I still have to pay taxes on it every year if I want to drive it. How fair is that? I guess stoptax.org isn't planning on doing away with that property tax, but eliminating property taxes on my home would be a relief, especially since I hardly buy anything other than food. The sales tax hike wouldn't hurt me all that much... and if it got bad I'd just buy more stuff online. :D

I suggest you go back to where they were higher, then, If you love these so much!. We southerners just aren't used to all this high falutin expensive livin'. I'll bet where you came from wages were quite a bit higher, too.

If we didn't have to fund projects that should be able to operate on their own revenue - ie Riverbanks Zoo and the Library - our taxes would come down. Where does all the money from one million visitors go?????

a tax increase is not always a bad thing.

I am definitely not going to slam public safety officials; I appreciate all that they do. I do want to comment about where our tax dollars go though. Tax increases are not ALWAYS a bad thing, but when our tax increases don't go to the right places, then they ARE. When we raise taxes to give office people raises and our hard working public safety employees are still sucking hind-tit there's a problem. Not to mention, when taxes are raised to fund living arrangements for more dead-beats who don't want to work and pay their own way like true Americans, but they snowball the local governments into paying their way for them. By the way, the ones who live off the government are the ones who use our emergency services the most and they DON'T PAY property taxes on real estate. Look at the statistics; most of the fire, E.M.S. and especially police calls are in the areas where the government pays for people to live. How do you think the tax payer feels when they need one of these services and they find out that the emergency service needed is busy in the government housing projects and their help is coming from further away? This may be understandable once or twice, but this happens more than the public knows. Trust me, I know. Simple solution.... eliminate property tax and raise sales tax so all residents, visitors and free-loaders can share in the tax paying responsibility.

The other thing that you may not realize is that your parents probably made a great deal more money in N.Y. than they would have in S.C. The cost of living is higher there. Therefore their retirement check is probably a lot higher than a S.C. retiree. This would explain why they moved down here. I bet they would not have moved down here if we charged extra taxes for out-of-state retirement checks. As a matter of fact, if high property taxes are not a big deal, what brings northerners down to South Carolina?

let's see why would someone from the north move here... the hospitable attitudes displayed by southerners, nope... the amazing educational system, nope... the progressive attitudes of county and state governments, nope... the weather and taxes, yup.

My folks retired here to be close to their grandkids and the cost of living was attractive. They both had incomes in the high 40's in NY, so we are, were, and have always been a middle class family, we were not wealthy by any means. I make almost 40K here and I just get by.

So before you get on your high horse about the cost of living here and how everything is so cheap here, and how expensive it is to live there, move there and try it. See how much farther what you think is a huge paycheck goes. A starter home in a nice neighborhood with good schools has set my cousins back $540,000, the taxes alone are half my yearly salary here.

You get what you pay for as far as tax supported systems go. Lexington EMS is being shored up by private services, I don't know how Richland does it, but I know they run out of overtime money every year around Jan/Feb. Who knows when these services will collapse on themselves.

If the policital subdivisions spent their money for fire and outher emergency services and cut out all the extras they may not have a problem .The goverment is so spoiled they give what they want and not need. Ballparks,Tennis courts,Leasure centers,i could go own for a long time but you get the point. Then they want to pay for this by taking your home if you do not pay for all the play toys.If you want services then you need to pay as you go and not make everyone else pay for other peoples play.Help eliminate the property taxes on your home.

That is a great idea! No taxes on our homes. And yea, the county can simply go get the budget from the tooth fairy too. What kind of thinking is that? Do you think for one second that eliminating the property tax will save you money? If you cut that tax, you simply have to raise another tax by the same amount. If it is not a tax on real estate then what are you going to suggest that the budget comes from? Obviously you are simply wanting someone else to "pay your way" in life. Let's tax that other guy, not me.

Way to big fella. You are really using that noggin today!

Well I think the local option sales tax that was recently approved by the voters was a good thing. It has been in effect for years in the Lowcountry. It helps offset the burden from property/homeowners to some of the "dead-beats" that were mentioned earlier. They get to pay some extra taxes even if they don't own anything.

And it helps pay for "official" trips to Hawaii!!

The government has no problem asking you for extra money. Why is it so utterly ridiculous to ask the government to cut spending?

Believe me, when earnings do not meet the projections your taxes WILL go up. And that's when you'll start whining about taxes and, "I thought the local option tax would cure all of this!! BoooHoooo..."

And county council will be able to extend you their middle finger and say, "You voted it in suckers! Sit and spin!"

You need to keep your superintendents/school boards straight. Nobody likes to waste money like they do. That's why are taxes are as high as they are - even though lower than some areas.
