Victim's Family Incensed By Inmate Complaints
GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. -- Some of the inmates at the Greenville County Jail claim that they are being price gouged -- but the family of a slain antique shop owner and those of other crime victims say, "Who cares ?"
County Councilman Tony Trout agrees with the inmates and said he thinks the jail is overcharging them and their families in the canteen. He said that prisoners are also paying too much for things like medical treatment and phone calls.

Excuse me, but you're in JAIL. You should have to pay (for a lot of things) while you're there. That's the problem now, people that have been to jail, and return because health, dental, meals, education, Etc. are for the most part free to them (you the taxpayer are paying heavy for these services).

You know, it's interesting (I've studied this stuff) that the idea of prison for most people is relatively recent, maybe the last 150 years. Before that, prison was only for rich folks and royalty that committed crimes. For the rest there was one penalty for most crimes and that was death. If it was something really small you might just be beaten or locked in a cage in public.
All the good times are past and gone.

For anyone else besides me here who has visited inmates at both Graham Correctional Institution and Goodman Correctional Institution; you've no doubt noticed the irony that despite the fact that the 2 prisons are side-by-side, the visitation there is worlds apart.
For instance, if you go to visit an inmate at Graham, you first have to be buzzed in through a fence topped with barb-wire. Then, you must wait your turn in line before being buzzed through a heavy steel door. After having emptied all your possessions out on the table for an officer to go through, you must next pass through a metal detector. Once this is complete, you are then buzzed through prison bars so that you may enter the visiting room. Every time you want to go to the restroom or the vending machine, you must wait to be buzzed back out through the prison bars. Then, you must be buzzed back in to return to the visiting room. Add to that that all of the visiting tables are jammed so tight together, and it makes for a loud visit.
Right next door at Goodman, all you have to do is walk up to the duty office, tell them who you are there to visit, and show them you I.D. and put all your money on the table so that a guard can insure that you have not brought more than $15.00 with you for the vending machines. Once your visitation pass is printed, you have the option of either visiting inside, or going outside to visit in the picnic area. And for those of you who have been back there on the compound, you've no doubt realized that that is where you can see the most impressive view of the Columbia Skyline.
Of course, Graham is Maximum-security and Goodman is Minimum security and thus the difference in how visitation is done.

Goodman is now a minimum-security womens prison. It had been a mens prison just a few years ago. It's a work camp, and some of the women do work in local restaurants and what not. The women at Goodman all have 8 years or less remaining on their sentence. It's a pre-requisite for being housed there. Before the women can go on work release, they must work a labor crew for 90 days doing stuff like picking up trash along the highways, doing landscaping at state agencies, etc.
A friend of mine there who I visit every weekend gets out August 1. She said that even though Leath Correctional in Greenwood is maximum-security, that it's preferable in alot of ways to Goodman. She works a labor crew on the prison grounds itsself doing landscaping. Unlike work release, it's a non-paying job.

I agree there may be some problems with the no smoking policy. Most of the county jails these days are non smoking anyway, so the newer inductees into the criminal halls of shame may be pretty much acclimated to it anyway....
Bottom line is simple....don't do the crime, and it wouldn't be a problem...

I'm just thinkin' about when I was a teacher at DJJ, cigarettes were like money, tradable for all kinds of stuff. There were even smaller denominations, where a kid would take a cigarette apart and re-roll it into two or three cigarettes ("roll-ups", while a whole cigarette was a "whole-up"). Of course it wasn't legal for them to have them, almost all of them being underage, but mostly parents smuggled them in on Sunday visits, along with marijuana, crack, liquor, real cash, etc. A favorite way to smuggle this stuff, which nearly always worked, was to open the bottom of a potato chip bag, put the stuff in there, and seal it back up.
Yes, I believe we would have had riots if they had cracked down on cigarettes altogether.
That place was such a nuthouse.

I truly believe that the people of SC would be better off if they closed DJJ and just declined to prosecute juvenile offenders. Of course I'd like to see a better alternative, but anything would be better than what we got now.
As it is, we have nearly 90% recidivism and most of them go on to adult prison. 50% are either dead or in prison for life before they are 25.
One of the problems is that kids with relatively minor offenses, like truancy*, are put into the same living facilities as murderers. If they aren't mean and violent when they arrive, they've got a very short time to become mean and violent or they'll be somebody's girlfriend every night and every day**.
*Under SC law a kid cannot be jailed just for truancy, but if he's already been to court and the judge has ordered him not to miss any more school and then he does miss more school, then he is in contempt of court and can be incarcerated for that. Then it's just a long trip down.
**The kids get away with just about anything in the dorms because: Under the statute that created DJJ, there is never supposed to be a situation in which there are more than 8 juveniles for every one staff member present. (I often had 30-40 students in classrooms designed for eight.) In the dorms they put ONE corrections officer all night long with often 90 or more kids. So of course there's not a damn thing he can do, and he doesn't get backup except in rare cases. So there is a deal, spoken or unspoken, that says "you don't bother me and I won't bother you". It's a tragedy, it's illegal, and it goes on this way forever.

Confessed double-murderer gets consecutive life sentences
A Swansea woman will spend the rest of her life in prison for murdering an elderly man and woman in separate incidents in 2002 and 2003.
Circuit Court Judge Edward B. Cottingham sentenced Anne Louise Gordon this morning to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. She pleaded guilty last week to avoid prosecutors’ seeking the death penalty against her, said her attorney, Cam Littlejohn.
Gordon admitted killing L.H. Tindall, 66, who was found shot in the back of the head on April 20, 2003, at his Lewis Rast Road home in Swansea, and Viola Pearl Neal, 80, who was found stabbed 27 times and shot in the back of the head on Sept. 23, 2002, at her Meadowfield Road home in Gaston.
Both homes, about seven miles apart, were set on fire in an attempt to cover up the killings, Lexington County Sheriff’s deputies said.
Gordon pleaded guilty to three charges in each slaying: murder, armed robbery and second-degree arson.
About two dozen family members and supporters of Tindall and Neal attended this morning's sentencing hearing. Four family members spoke about the victims and the impact their murders have had on their families.
A dozen of Gordon's supporters also attended, mostly from the West Columbia Church of Christ. Three of them attested to Gordon's conversion to Christianity since the killings and her church work with other prison inmates.
Gordon’s co-defendant, Paul Edward Anderson, has not been tried.

I'm so terribly sorry your honor. I don't know how I came to this place in my life, I just don't know."
****
Gordon's been baptized since she's been in jail. Members of her church told the judge that she's become the matron of the detention center, ministering and bringing hundreds into the church.
Lexington County solicitor Donnie Myers was prepared to seek the death penalty against Gordon. In court, he referred to an exclusive phone interview when Gordon talked with WIS News 10's Kara Gormley from behind bars. "She struck up a friendship with a TV reporter and told this reporter for publication how innocent she was. She was the victim. That doesn't sound like a lot of repentance to me."
***
Viola Peal Neal's daughter held on to one of her mother's pillow's as the judge threw the book at Gordon, giving her life in prison. "You should not see the light of day outside of prison walls for the rest of your life."
Before she left the courtroom, Gordon sobbed, telling church members "everythings okay," that God was with her.

I figured he wouldn't be ablt to help her. I'm not surprised by the conclusion to this at all.
I received a phone call from Anne yesterday, and I hate to burst everyones bubble....but she was very upbeat....and this isn't over after all. She informed me that her counsel came to see her at the jail yesterday and told her that an appeal is going to be filed. Those calls from the jail are on timers, so she didn't have much time to go into it.
Also, I have advised Anne that she may want to consider filing a Post-Conviction Relief due to ineffective assistance of counsel. You see, she was told that if she didn't plead guilty to both murders, the 11th Circuit Solicitors Office was going to seek the death penalty against Anne Louise for the murder of Viola Pearl Neal. Only problem is is that even prosecutor Dayton Riddle said at the sentencing hearing that he couldn't say for sure who stabbed Viola Pearl Neal 27 times. The stabbing was the cause of death. Under the 1982 U.S. Supreme Court ruling of Enmund v. Florida 458 U.S. 782, a defendant who it cannot be shown beyond a reasonable doubt either committed a Murder or intended for a murder to take place cannot receive the death penalty. At the very least, Anne should have been advised about this before having this guilty plea rammed down her throat. Had she been advised of this, then she could have made a more informed decision and thus, she would have gone to trial. If she is granted relief, the guilty plea would be thrown out as I understand it.
So while the deaths of Mrs. Neal and Mr. Tindal are indeed tragic and unfortunate, the celebrations here are premature to say the least.

Anne was moved from the Lexington County Detention Center on Friday, July 20, 2007. She is now at Graham Correctional Institution for Women off of Broad River Rd. in Columbia. She is currently housed in Receiving & Evaluation(R&E), where she will remain for a minimum period of 30 days. She is inmate #323003. I have already written to her at that address. I have also informed her many, many supporters of her new address so that they can write her as well.
Yesterday, I visited a friend of mine at Goodman Correctional Institution for Women, which is right next door to where Anne Louise is currently housed. Me and my friend visited outside in the picnic area in full sight of the building that currently houses Anne Louise. This friend I visited yesterday is the individual who introduced me to Anne last year. Despite her incarceration, Anne now enjoys much more freedom of movement than she had the last 4 years in the LCDC. For instance, Anne gets to walk outside to the cafeteria in the fresh air 3 times a day. In the county detention center, she was fed in a cell. Also, while in R&E, Anne will be able to go to the gymnasium for 1 hour a day monday-friday for exercise. At the detention center, her rec time consisted of being on the roof in a "rec yard" without much space. On the weekends while in R&E, Anne will get 1 hour a day in the rec yard attached to R&E.
Anne will enjoy even more freedom of movement once she gets placed in general population at either Graham or Leath Correctional. After Anne has been in R&E for 30 days, I will be able to visit her. Just getting to be close to her for 4 hours yesterday was great. She really does have a good heart.
In addition to the several options that will be explored to get Anne released from prison(or at least have her sentence greatly reduced), it has been rumoured that prosecutors are willing to seek to have Anne's sentence reduced to 10 years if she testifies in any future prosecutions for the murders of Viola Pearl Neal and L.H. Tindal.

Anne Louise was moved from R&E to Leath Correctional in Greenwood on August 30. She has lost ***26 pounds*** since she left the Lexington County Detention Center on July 20. She has had some visitors from her church in West Columbia make the trip to Greenwood to see her. I will be going to see her in the next couple of weeks.
She continues to remain in good spirits. She and I write each other at least a couple of times a week. We're hoping to file her Pardon Application early next year. Many people(myself included) who know and love her have been sending her money to her Cooper Trust Fund account, so she's not having to do without. If she remains misconduct free for 6 months from the time she arrived at Leath Correctional(August 30, 2007), she can apply to be moved back to Graham Correctional off of Broad River Rd. That would be awesome!
She is involved with 2 prison bible study groups. One meets every Thursday, and the other one meets every other Tuesday. She seems to be making the adjustment to prison extremely well. Of course, she had alot of practice with the oppressive 4 years and 3 months she spent in the Lexington County Detention Center awaiting trial.
I'll keep y'all posted on how she's doing.

Judge Orders Man to Spends One Night as a Homeless Person
PAINESVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- A Salvation Army worker who was ordered by a judge to spend a night homeless for stealing a holiday kettle containing about $250 returned to court Friday with red eyes and red cheeks.
Nathen Smith who was fitted with a GPS device to track his moves, spent Thursday night ducking in and out of government buildings for warmth, including a stop at the Lake County sheriff's office.
Smith also walked through a park, but did not go under a bridge where many of Painesville's homeless sleep, probation supervisor David Washlock said.
"It's hard to find a spot to go that's warm, unless you're inside," an unshaven Smith told Municipal Judge Michael Cicconetti, who issued the sentenced.
Smith, 28, worked as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army outside a Kmart store in nearby Eastlake on Dec. 17. Police arrested Smith at his mother's house after a co-worker reported that one of eight kettles was missing.
The Salvation Army uses kettle donations to help pay for food, clothing and shelter for the homeless.
Smith, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of theft, still must serve three days in jail, do eight hours of community service, get a general equivalency diploma and find a job, the judge said.
Painesville is about 30 miles northeast of Cleveland.

Saluda deputy questioned about drug purchases
By KENNY MAPLE/ Index-Journal staff writer
Wednesday, January 30, 2008 12:23 AM EST
NINETY SIX - A Saluda County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been questioned about the purchasing of large amounts of Ephedrine/Sudafed.
According to a Ninety Six Police Department report, Sgt. Michael D. Franklin was patrolling near the Shell station in the town on Sunday evening when he was flagged down by the state’s district manager. The manager said Marty Cecil Fulmer, an off-duty deputy who was driving his squad car, had purchased more than 144 pills since Jan. 9.
A Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office report indicates Fulmer has purchased 16 boxes of Ephedrine pills containing 24 blister packs since the January date.
Non-prescription drugs such as Sudafed have become prime targets for people who purchase or shoplift the products for methamphetamine cooks, who then extract the pseudoephedrine from the binding agents in tablets or capsules using a dangerous and highly toxic process. The drug’s popularity with the meth culture has led many state governments, including South Carolina, to monitor the sale of over-the-counter products that contain pseudoephedrine, the active ingredient crucial to the manufacture of meth.
Such products must now be sold behind sales counters, signatures and IDs collected from customers at the time of purchase, along with proof that purchasers are at least 18 years old.
Franklin’s report also says the Shell station manager said Fulmer gave her an attitude because she refused to sell him any of the pills.
Franklin said Fulmer got back in his patrol car and pulled out of the parking lot. That’s when Franklin went into the station to speak with the manager. There he obtained the deputy’s name and address. Another store clerk said Fulmer had used different names and identifications to purchase the pills.
Reportedly, the clerk told Franklin the Pic’ N Sav also sold Ephedrine/ Sudafed.
Franklin reportedly went to the Pic’ N Sav, where he found the deputy’s car parked around the side of the building. Franklin reported Fulmer was inside purchasing the medicine. Franklin said he asked the clerk if Fulmer did indeed purchase the pills. She confirmed the sale.
The incident report says Franklin stopped the deputy from getting in his patrol car. Then, as the two men were talking, a Greenwood County unit drove by, Franklin reported. He flagged the car down and advised GCSO Deputy Matt Mitchell of the situation.
Franklin also said he notified Ninety Six Police Chief Don Denny. The three questioned Fulmer. According to the report, Fulmer said he had a sinus problem, and that he had taken up to 30 to 40 pills a day. The GCSO report indicates Fulmer said he has a hard time breathing with his ballistic vest on and that the pills helped him.
As the man was being questioned, Mitchell reported Fulmer was extremely nervous and visibly shaking. Mitchell asked the man if he had a weapon on him, and with the man’s consent searched him. Mitchell found a subcompact Glock with two magazines in between the driver’s seat and the console.
Mitchell reportedly asked the Saluda deputy why he drove to Ninety Six to buy the pills, and Fulmer said he couldn’t get them in Saluda.
Franklin seized the records from the Pic’ N Sav and the Shell station of how many times Fulmer had purchased the pills. Reportedly, Mitchell called in Greenwood County’s Vice Team, and Denny called the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office and advised them of the situation.
Shortly after the vice team arrived, Cpt. Robert Shorter, of the Saluda Sheriff’s Office, arrived and took the deputy’s car as well as the Glock.
Mitchell reported receiving a Blue Ribbon Ephedrine box that contained 25 tablets that the Saluda deputy had purchased at the Pic’ N Save. The box was taken into evidence. No charges have been field.
A written statement was obtained from the Shell station clerk that Fulmer had used two different identifications to purchase Epinephrine/ Sudafed.
The investigation was turned over to the vice team, the Ninety Six report states.
On Tuesday, GCSO Chief Deputy Mike Frederick indicated GCSO coordinated with Saluda authorities, and the investigation will likely be passed on to SLED.
Phone calls made to the Fulmer’s home were not answered, nor was the deputy available at the Saluda Sheriff’s Office.

The six traffic fatalities in the City of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Aiken</st1:City></st1:place> last year devastated the community, prompting Public Safety to form a team dedicated to traffic enforcement and education.
In response to the lives claimed and the success that dedicated traffic teams have had at curbing fatalities statewide, Aiken Public Safety applied for a three-year grant from the S.C. Office of Highway Safety, and last spring was awarded the money at an 80 percent state and 20 percent city match split.
<st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">South Carolina</st1:place></st1:State> will provide 80 percent of the funding, about $194,000. The City of <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Aiken</st1:place></st1:City> will budget the remainder.
Cpl. Chris Carter and officer Jason Griffin now both serve on that team.
An officer for eight years, Carter has watched several families suffer when they learn a loved one has died in a traffic crash. That's why, he said, he applied to be a member of the city's first traffic team.
He spent most of the day Wednesday in his new Dodge Charger, where he received plenty of strange looks.
The grant money paid for two additional officers' salaries, equipment and two new black Chargers that undoubtedly stand out from the other Public Safety vehicles on the road.
These are marked with the letters H.E.A.T, Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Driving.
On Wednesday, Carter said he came across a number of motorists speeding and not wearing seat belts and got to work.
Those two factors weigh heavily into whether a person will survive a crash, and Carter said he has seen the worst and wants to save lives.
The recent annexation of <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Whiskey Road</st1:address></st1:Street> also factors into the request for additional officers.
Carter and <st1:City w:st="on">Griffin</st1:City> will be on patrol throughout the City of <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Aiken</st1:place></st1:City>, but department spokesperson Lt. David Turno added that they will be especially visible during the holidays.
"That's when we can really use the added enforcement," Turno said.
He explained that the number of drunken drivers always jumps around the holidays.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

The video shows what Judd says is the second of five beatings the 16-year-old received from people she knew. The attackers say they were upset with so-called "trash talk" the victim posted on her MySpace page, and they say they wanted to post their own video of the beating on MySpace and YouTube.
The sheriff says the victim was first beaten unconscious in a bedroom. When she awoke, she was on a couch in the living room, where the screaming and beatings continued.
When they were in a holding cell, they were all laughing," Judd says. "One of the teens arrested, who is a cheerleader, asked, 'Does this mean I'm going to miss cheerleading practice tomorrow?' The others were cutting up and said, 'It looks like we won't be going to the beach this weekend.'"

Sheriff Joe for President
05-12-2008, 12:26 PM
You all remember Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona , who painted the jail cells pink and made the inmates wear pink prison garb. Well.........
Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!
Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.
The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.
The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.
The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.
I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand. He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.
Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.
TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO
HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF
AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona ) who created the ' Tent City Jail':
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.
He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but 'G' movies.
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.
Then He Started Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn't Get
Sued For Discrimination.
He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order that Required Cable TV For Jails So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel.
When asked why the weather channel He Replied, So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna Be While They Are Working
ON My Chain Gangs.
He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.
When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton.....If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back.'
He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.
When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.
More On The Arizona Sheriff:
With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix (116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), the Associated Press Reports:
About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their Government-Issued
Pink Boxer Shorts.
On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 Degrees Inside The Week Before.
Many Were Also Swathed In Wet, Pink Towels As Sweat Collected On Their Chests And Dripped Down To Their PINK SOCKS.
'It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace,' Said James Zanzot, An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year. 'It's Inhumane.'
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too, And They Have To Wear Full Battle Gear,
But They Didn't Commit Any Crimes,So Shut Your Mouths!'
Way To Go, Sheriff!
Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.
Sheriff Joe was just reelected Sheriff in Maricopa County , Arizona

OK, this looks like the right bunch to ask...if I'm not interrupting something important ??? Today coming back to Cola from Chucktown on 26, I was passed near Orangeburg by a black Ford Crown Victoria - I mean all black, glass, bumpers, you name it - including the license tag - of which there was none, but anyway, it had the most interesting things on top of the trunk lid, it looked like 3 or 4 black cans or candy cannisters,(OK, I'ma girl, what else can you comapre a can to but another can...) maybe the size of a can of vegetables, each pointed in a different direction, with one at 10 oclock, 2 oclock, and 4 oclock, (relative to the cars direction of travel.) with cables running back into the trunk. I tried to catch up to it for a couple of reasons, one I'm in a G35 and I can catch anything, two, my bosses name gets me out of most jams fairly quickly, and three, if this guy can fly low, so can I ...but when he saw I was catching up to him he did the UFO thing and zoomed off into the distance at well over 120, and while I can be a fast woman sometimes, this fast woman does not drive 120 for extended periods in heavy traffic for fear of having some rednecks pick-up bumper come through the front window and ruin this $7500 smile.
So guys, what did I just see? Who or what is this stealth guy that likes to fly low? and what are those gizmos on the back ? It just bothers me to not know what I want to know, you know? Thanks boys, see you at the club.

Eastover (WLTX) - A relic country store on U.S. 378 is gone, and now investigators have ruled the cause of the fire as arson.
Columbia Deputy Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins say his department started battling the blaze at the former Sandhills Mercantile at 11600 Garners Ferry Road in Eastover just after 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
He says it took firefighters nearly two hours to contain the fire that had already engulfed 90% of the building when they arrived. No word on how or where it started.
The fire marshal's office determined that the cause was not accidental, and have passed the investigation along to the Richland County Sheriff's Department.
No one was injured in the fire and Jenkins says it's unclear if the electricity was turned on in the building. He says SCE&G were out surveying the rubble Sunday.
Anyone with information that could help investigators find the person responsible for the blaze should call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
That store has been in that spot for generations and finally someone wants to restore it. Then some Alpha Hotel decides to play with matches, I hop they "burn" him when they catch him.

An estimated 500 repeat DUI offenders in South Carolina next year will have to blow into a device in their vehicles to prevent them from driving drunk.
The state Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services on Tuesday unveiled the ignition interlock program, which takes effect Thursday.
“What we are talking about today is a giant step toward protecting South Carolina state’s roads, streets and highways,” said department director Samuel Glover. “If they do not get this device, they simply will not be able to drive in South Carolina — legally, I should say.”

The device requires you to blow into it periodocally while driving. the only way to beat it would be to have a sober person ride with you. It would take an idiot to get be sober and get in a car with a drunk and then blow for him so he could drive.

Some 'dirtbag' in Polk County Florida who got pulled over in a routine traffic stop ended up 'executing' the deputy who stopped him. The deputy was shot eight times, including once behind his right ear at close range.
Another deputy was wounded and a police dog killed. A state wide manhunt ensued.
The low-life was found hiding in a wooded area with his gun. SWAT team officers fired and hit the guy 68 times.
Now here's the kicker:
Naturally, the media asked why they shot him 68 times. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, told the Orlando Sentinel: "That's all the bullets we had !!'

Lexington County (WLTX) - Lexington County Sheriff's Department deputies arrested two men and one 15-year-old boy in connection with trying to fatally shoot a sheriff's deputy.
Sheriff James Metts say the deputy was responding to a call from a citizen concerning a suspicious vehicle on Oakwood Drive near West Columbia just after 3 a.m. Investigators say the two men and 15-year-old boy opened fire with a 12-gauge shotgun while Deputy Ted Xanthakis and his K-9 police dog partner, Arcos, were in Xanthakis' marked patrol car.

Man Shot, Killed While Playing Soccer with His Daughter
http://www.wltx.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=71192&catid=2
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- North Charleston police say three men are charged with murder after a man playing soccer with his 5-year-old daughter was fatally shot and robbed.
The Charleston Post and Courier reports Thursday that 17-year-old Anthony Brown, 18-year-old Marquise Summers and 19-year-old Marvin Rutledge were arrested Wednesday.
All are charged with murder and armed robbery in the death of 24-year-old Orlando Benitez. The three live in the mobile home park where the shooting occurred Tuesday.
Police Chief Jon Zumalt said the suspects jumped Benitez. He resisted and was shot in the back with a .40-caliber handgun during the struggle. His daughter ran inside and wasn't hurt.
The chief said the men then took Benitez's wallet. He died about 20 minutes later at a hospital.

Sumter (WLTX) - The parents of a Sumter toddler who died Monday due to what police say was starvation were back in court Thursday.
A judge decided that there was probable cause for DSS to take their other four children into custody.
Marketta Sharnise McCray and her husband, Kevin DeWayne Isaac, were both present and visibly shaken. Both of Isaac's parents and McCray's mother sat behind the couple.
The two were arrested Monday after police were called to their home about a child who was unresponsive. Officers found 17-month-old Sincere Isaac in filthy pajamas. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators have described the conditions inside the home as 'deplorable,' saying there were dead rats, roaches, along with dog feces everywhere.
Four other children in the home were taken into protective custody. One of them, Sincere's twin sister Treasure, was taken to Palmetto Health in Columbia, where at last check, her condition was improving.
The couple admitted that there was a reason for DSS to remove their children from their home.
A judge decided the children will remain in foster care, at least until the next hearing on April 2.
Marketta's mother said she was "just hurt" and couldn't speak on camera.

Richland County (WLTX) - Richland County deputies say they've arrested a woman in connection with the death of her child--a death which took place just over a year ago.
Kathyrine Myers, 20, faces a charge of homicide by child abuse.
Deputies say Myers was being questioned in a forgery case in Washtenaw County, Michigan when she apparently incriminated herself in the death of her three-month-old son.
Her son died on February 29, 2008 while in Richland County. Deputies believed the child died of asphyxiation due to unsafe sleeping conditions.
Deputies are working to extradite Myers back to Richland County.

Madrid, Spain (CNN)- An Iranian woman living in Spain is welcoming a Tehran court ruling that awards her eye-for-an-eye justice against a suitor who blinded her.
In a Spanish radio interview, she says her aim isn't revenge -- it's to make sure her suffering isn't repeated.
Ameneh Bahrami was blinded and disfigured in 2004 when a man she had spurned threw acid on her. Late last year, an Iranian court reportedly ruled that Islamic justice calls for the attacker to be blinded with acid, too.
But the victim says she is entitled to blind Majid Movahedi in only one eye, because under Iranian law "each man is worth two women."
She also says he would be blinded by having several drops of acid put into one eye, whereas she had acid splashed all over her face and other parts of her body.
She says she's waiting for a letter from the court telling her to go back to Iran for the punishment to be carried out.
Bahrami tells CNN she first crossed paths with her attacker Movahedi in 2002, when they attended the same university. She was a 24-year-old electronics student. He was 19. She never noticed him until they shared a class. He sat next to her one day and brushed up against her. Bahrami says she knew it wasn't an accident.
"I moved away from him," she said, "but he brushed up against me again." When Bahrami stood up in class and screamed for him to stop, Movahedi just looked at her in stunned silence. Bahrami said that over the next two years, Movahedi kept harassing her and making threats, even as he asked her to marry him.
Then one day she was leaving work and he snuck up behind her. When she turned around he threw acid on her face.

Pizza Delivery Man Shoots, Kills Robber
Irmo (WLTX) - A suspected robber is dead after officials say a pizza man shot him in during the robbery.
Lexington County Sheriff James Metts says Saturday night, four men ordered pizza to a house on Avery Place Lane with the intent of robbing whomever delivered it. None of the four lived there and officials say the homeowner did not realize his home was being used for a robbery.
Pizza Hut delivery man, 43-year-old Christopher Miller, says he showed up at the home at 10:30 p.m. and 17-year-old Paul Sturgill was standing on the sidewalk waiting for him. Officials say soon after Miller got out of the car, two other men ran at him from the woods.
When Miller started running away, that's when authorities say Sturgill continually tried beating him in the face. Miller, who has a concealed weapons permit, says he pulled out .45 caliber handgun that he had in his fanny pack and shot Sturgill in his chest.
Sturgill was taken to the hospital where he later died.
The three other suspects ran and officials are still looking for one of the men.
He's 18-year-old Justin Roundtree. Metts says he's wanted for robbery and criminal conspiracy. Roundtree is a member of a criminal gang and is 5-foot-5 and weighs 160 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
Call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC with any information you may have that can help authorities catch Roundtree.
Meantime, Lexington County officials arrested 18-year-old Jason Beckham, at the home of the alleged robber who died early Sunday morning. Beckham is at the Lexington County Detention Center waiting a bond hearing on charges of robbery and criminal conspiracy.
20-year-old Carlos Dates is also behind bars awaiting a bond hearing on the same charges and was arrested Sunday afternoon in connection to the crime.
An autopsy will be performed Monday on Sturgill.
Miller has not been charged in connection to the shooting, but the incident remains under investigation.
The only bad thing about this is now Pizza Hut will probaly fire the driver.

It seems more and more people are taking this course of action to protect themselves, their families, and their homes. It seems lately that crime is running rampant. I was in a gun shop the other day inquiring about the next concealed weapons class and was told that they were booked up until May, the shop said they were offering 4-5 classes a month and the slots filled very quickly.

Good for the pizza driver. He should absolutely not face charges. Its real tough to feel sorry for a kid like that. His parents can say "He's a good kid"...but if he was really that good of a kid, he wouldn't be trying to commit a robbery like this. In this situation, it was very easy for him to know right from wrong. He chose wrong and paid the ultimate price.

Sounds like just another little wannabe thug-gang-banger to me. I feel horrible for the family & the loss they are having to deal with now, but I can't say that I feel too sorry for the kid. Those kids (and they were kids) took no mercy on the delivery guy and it probably would have been much worse had he not had that gun. You would hope this kid didn't die completely in vain and that maybe some other little wannabe thug-gang-banger will read about this and maybe not want to follow in those footsteps... you can hope.

A pizza deliveryman, who said Monday he has been held up twice before, fired shots that killed a teenager during a holdup because he feared he would die and not see his wife and 5-year-old daughter again.
“I believe everyone has the right to defend themselves if their lives are threatened,” Christopher Miller, 43, said in a statement issued through police.

Miller, who said he has delivered pizza for about 10 years, has resigned because Pizza Hut bans employees’ carrying weapons, corporate spokesman Chris Fuller said.

It wouldn't be possible to require drivers to carry weapons, but I sure as heck wouldn't do that job without one.
What they can do now is to redline certain neighborhoods into which they will not deliver. Either that or send two people out with each delivery. One for security.
That driver will never be convicted, nor will a jury find against him in any civil action. Suicide cannot be called a duty.

Irmo (WLTX) - The Pizza Hut delivery driver who Lexington County deputies say shot and killed a person who tried to rob him has left his job.
Christopher Miller, 43, has resigned his position, according to Chris Fuller, a spokesperson for Pizza Hut.
Fuller would not discuss why Miller resigned, because he says it is a personnel matter.
Pizza Hut has a policy against employees carrying weapons.
Miller was carrying a loaded .45 caliber handgun during the incident. He has a valid concealed weapons permit.

The first part of this, sadly enough, just screams "lawsuit in the making". Sounds like a good idea, but I'm sure someone somewhere would try to sue and some lawyer would take the case.
As for the second part... regarding having two people delivering pizzas... that's just not cost efficient. You don't make a lot of money delivering pizzas as it is. I'm not sure how it is now, but years ago you made milage plus tips (Papa Johns)... maybe a small hourly amount as well, but I can't really remember. Some nights you made more than others, but you aren't making a fortune by any means so if you had to split that already small amount in two... eh, I don't see if working for long.
I say let them carry guns (or the weapon of their choice... just to be fair) and if it is life or death and they have to defend themselves then so be it. Gang-bangers need to be taught that they don't own the streets and there are consequences to their actions.

You're right, it probably is a lawsuit waiting to happen. (if there haven't been some already...I've heard of pizza places not delivering to certain neighborhoods before) However, any lawsuit like that should immediately be thrown out. Pizza Hut, Domino's, etc., are private companies, and should be able to deliver to whoever they see fit. If they believe their drivers are in danger going to certain neighborhoods, they should have the right not to deliver there.

It's a lawsuit ready to happen. Also this point, almost any business will tell you, if you're being robbed, give them the money. If the pizza guy was told it was a robbery and fought against it, that's other issue that a lawsuit will bring up that will work against the driver.
Do I think a lawsuit should happen? No.
Do I think a lawsuit WILL happen? Yes.
Pizza Hut will settle the lawsuit before it reaches trial under a confidentially agreement.

Columbia (WLTX) - The 11th Circuit Solictor's office says a former pizza delivery driver who shot and killed a robbery suspect will not face charges.
Solicitor Donnie Myers's office concluded Thursday that Christopher Miller, 43, acted in self-defense.
Meanwhile, Miller has released a new statement to the public, where he thanks people for all the support he's gotten and explains his decision to leave his job.
Last Saturday night, Lexington deputies say four men ordered pizza to a house on Avery Place Drive with the intent of robbing whomever delivered it. None of the four lived there and officials say the homeowner did not realize his home was being used for a robbery.
Miller was the one who arrived at the home, and when he got out of his vehicle, first encountered 17-year-old Paul Sturgill, then the other three suspects.
During the robbery attempt and the resulting struggle, officers say Miller shot Sturgill. He later died.
In his new statement, Miller says he's been the victim of a robbery before. He also says he willingly resigned his position, and was not fired.
Here is Miller's new statement in its entirety.
"My name is Christopher Miller; I am the driver who got robbed last Saturday. I would like to make the following statement regarding my leaving Pizza Hut.
"I have read a lot of comments that have been posted on the websites and I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for your support; they have greatly encouraged me and my family through this very difficult time. I also ask that you have some sympathy and compassion for the family of the boy that died, they are suffering more than I, please keep them in your prayers. I have been delivering pizza on and off, both fulltime and part-time for 10 years and this is the third time I have been robbed. I have delivered for both Dominos and Pizza Hut and both companies have a no weapons policy. I advised my manager the night of the robbery that I will no longer work at Pizza Hut as a delivery driver. I knew after what happened that my career as a driver was over. I have read a lot of comments about boycotting Pizza Hut; I am asking that you to not do that. I ask you this because I have a lot of friends at that store and they are all good people and they need your support. I am friends with all the drivers there and they are very apprehensive about every delivery they take. Those drivers need the support of good customers. Instead of boycotting the store, I ask that you have your order delivered and thank the driver by giving them a good tip. I care for the people at that store and I don't want them to be punished for something that is not their fault. Again, I thank you for your notes of support and encouragement, I am doing ok. I'm taking it one day at a time and I do have a fulltime job that helps support me."
I can agree with their policy, but I also agree with Zoo, if you are a properly training and certified Concealed Permit Holder and sign a form stating that under their policy, there should not be a problem.

BEVERLY, Mass. (AP) -- A Massachusetts man accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill his 9-year-old daughter, estranged wife and mother-in-law has decided not to withdraw his guilty plea.
John Orlowski, of Beverly, pleaded guilty last year and agreed with prosecutors to a 12-year sentence. But a federal judge last month said the sentence was too lenient and refused to accept the deal.
That gave the 50-year-old Orlowski the option of withdrawing his plea and going to trial.
The Salem News reports that, according to a filing on Monday, Orlowski will face sentencing without the agreement.
Prosecutors say Orlowski offered $2,000 in 2007 to a former gang member he met in jail to kill his family.
What could a 9 year old child do to warrant a hit man?
They need to bury this guy.

Completely agree! It is ridiculous not to report a physical description of any "suspect" especially when reporting a crime to the police. Let's hope that the victim was not hesitant in reporting these details as a result of the Gates incident. The news rarely reports physical descriptions these days. Even when they know who the suspect is, they simply show a photograph which, I might add, are often mug shots! Many people just listen to the television while they are busy doing other things; therefore, I think that an oral description should be provided even when a photo is available.

Deputies: Mom Gave Kids Cocaine, Pot
http://www.wyff4.com/news/26164445/detail.html
A 31-year-old Henderson County woman is charged with child abuse after she intentionally gave her young children cocaine, marijuana and other narcotics, deputies said.
Henderson County sheriff's detectives arrested Tracy Leigh Delozier on Thursday. Investigators said the children are 2 and 9 years old.
She sure won't be getting Ladies Home Journal "Parent of the Year" Award this year.
