COLUMBIA, SC (AP)- Two South Carolina Highway Patrolmen killed in the line of duty 75 years ago will have their names added to a memorial in Washington next month.
The Highway Patrol recently discovered the officers' names were not on the National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial Wall.
Patrolman William Pierre Lancaster was killed in 1932 after his motorcycle hit a horse buggy in Florence County. Lancaster had been with the force for six months.
Patrolman John Davenport Cunningham was killed in 1933 when his motorcycle hit another vehicle in Spartanburg County. Cunningham had been a patrolman more than two years.
The names are to be added May 13th.
Colonel Russell Roark says the patrol is trying to find the officers' relatives.

Blood Drive Held in Memory of Fallen Deputies http://www.wltx.com/assetpool/images/0674122122_red%20cross.gif
Columbia) - The Richland County Sheriff's Department and the American Red Cross are holding a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Columbia Place Mall in the Center Court on the lower level.
Red Cross officials say the blood supply is "extremely low," and they need anyone interested in giving to participate.
The Sheriff's Department is conducting this blood drive to help the American Red Cross improve the blood supply in the Midlands. Deputies say the blood drive is being held in memory of Richland County Sheriff's Department deputies who have died in the line of duty.
Also, the Richland County Sheriff's Department is competing with Lexington County Sheriff's Department and other local law enforcement agencies who collected 111 units during a January blood drive.
Deputies say the competitive nature of law enforcement and the community will benefit the ones who need the blood the most.

(<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1:place>Columbia</st1:place></st1:City>) -- Officers involved in a shooting can become emotionally drained from the situation. That’s why many departments provide post-shooting intervention for their employees.
Because they rarely have to pull the trigger, instances like the stand-off on <st1:Street><st1:address>Samson Road</st1:address></st1:Street> Sunday can really haunt an officer.
"Officers are victims too," said Lieutenant Lancy Weeks with the Richland County Sheriff's Department.
”(They can feel) anger to fear to concern. Though most of them are fine in the long term, what we try to do is provide all the support we possibly can to officers involved in shootings,” said Dr. Larry Bergmann, Director of Post Trauma Resources.
The support begins with the most familiar of faces. Lt. Weeks says the Richland County Victim's Assistance takes the officer to an isolated location to provide initial comfort.
”The officers know us, we're family. They know we'll treat them with compassion and dignity,” said Lt. Weeks.
And then Dr. Bergmann steps in.
”We give them the opportunity to talk and we give them information about what they're likely to feel and that it's normal,” said Dr. Bergmann.
To keep that sense of normalcy, an officer might get a replacement gun and also an officer to accompany them, because Dr. Bergmann says they’re concerned with the officer when they’re at work and at home.
Because an officer’s job is so stressful, both Lt. Weeks and Dr. Bergmann say counseling is important for the physical and mental health of an officer.
”The main thing is to be there for the officer, let them know somebody cares, that they're not out there alone,” said Lt. Weeks.
An officer is administratively assigned a different position during the investigation, and Dr. Bergmann says it takes each one a different amount of time to return to the line of duty.

Public Safety Dispatchers are truly the forgotten heroes. Dispatchers are quite often the first responders at the scene of an emergency. They handle calls for assistance from distraught, angry, hostile, stressed, emotional, or down right nasty citizens. All too infrequently do they ever get the recognition for what they do ~ their successes and valiant attempts to fix what can't be fixed (even when they do their best, and it doesn't work.) They send officers in to situations where the details are sketchy at best. We worry about the safety of those we dispatch. We suffer tremendous emotional stress when things go haywire. We are our own best critics.
This site is dedicated to those dispatchers who have spent a career behind the mic. They dispatch no longer. They will never answer another 9-1-1 call. They are our heroes. We shall never forget them.

COLUMBIA -- The state parole board refused Wednesday to release convicted cop killer Richard Workman.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comhttp://www.friendsofsc.com/forums/ /><o:p></o:p>
State board denies release for 14th time<o:p></o:p>

<st1:City w:st=[/IMG]<st1:place w:st=" /><st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Rock Hill</st1:place></st1:City> Police officer Steve Jordan in the pre-dawn hours of New Year's Eve 1975, when the 22-year-old rookie stopped to help him after his vehicle had apparently broken down. <o:p></o:p>
Workman, then 24, shot <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Jordan</st1:place></st1:country-region> 14 times, gouged his eyes out and stuffed one of the eyeballs inside his jacket pocket. He was sentenced to die. <o:p></o:p>
But Workman escaped the death penalty 10 months later when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled mandatory death-penalty laws unconstitutional. His sentence was commuted to life in prison. <o:p></o:p>
</o:p>
Workman has been eligible for parole since 1984, said Pete O'Boyle, a spokesman for the S.C. Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. Workman's case now comes before the parole board every two years. <o:p></o:p>
On Wednesday morning, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Jordan</st1:country-region>'s friends and family made their biennial trip to <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Columbia</st1:place></st1:City> to tell the board why Workman should remain in prison. Fifteen people showed up, bringing with them petitions signed by 2,664 individuals opposed to Workman's release. <o:p></o:p>
"I told them (the parole board) that the petitions spoke volumes about how our citizens of <st1:City w:st="on">Rock Hill</st1:City> and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">York</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">County</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> feel about this case," Rock Hill Police Lt. Jerry Waldrop said. "Although it has been 32 years, we still feel that he got the death penalty and that justice was not served. And he needs to serve his entire life in prison." <o:p></o:p>
One of <st1:country-region w:st="on">Jordan</st1:country-region>'s colleagues and a friend, Waldrop was scheduled to be in the patrol car instead of <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Jordan</st1:place></st1:country-region> on the night he was murdered. But one officer was out, so Waldrop took the role of walking the downtown beat, while <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Jordan</st1:place></st1:country-region> drove the patrol car. <o:p></o:p>
"It's always a good feeling when we can come away from there knowing that he'll spend two more years in prison," Waldrop said. "At least that." <o:p></o:p>
Waldrop, however, wasn't the only person to speak to the parole board. For the first time, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Jordan</st1:place></st1:country-region>'s widow, Sue Jordan Phillips, also had a message. <o:p></o:p>
"I wanted them (the parole board) to know that he took their Paw-Paw from them," she said, referring to Steve Jordan's grandchildren, ages 8 and 12, who also were there. <o:p></o:p>
Although she was relieved with the board's decision, she knows the battle isn't over. <o:p></o:p>
"We just have to keep fighting," she said. "We're going to fight till he's in there till death." <o:p></o:p>

I just do not understand how and who it is that makes up such laws that would even consider having a parole hearing every 2 years for a creature such as this! The only reform for someone in a situation like this is DEATH!! Someone needs to put them out of their own misery. You CANNOT, possibly cannot reform the mind of an animal such as this. Give us cool heads, stout hearts, hard punches, an uncanny flair for investigation and wise judgment. You know Saint Michael, from your own experiences with the devil that the policeman's lot on earth is not always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the devil, and your angelic self-control give us inspiration. I have been where you fear to be,
I have seen what you fear to see,
I have done what you fear to do -
All these things I have done for you.
I am the person you lean upon,
The one you cast your scorn upon,
The one you bring your troubles to -
All these people I've been for you.
The one you ask to stand apart,
The one you feel should have no heart,
The one you call "The Statie,"
But I'm just a person, not to be hated.
And through the years I've come to see,
That I am not always what you ask of me;
So, take this badge ... take this gun ...
Will you take it ... will anyone?
And when you watch a person die
And hear a battered baby cry,
Then do you think that you can be
All these things you ask of me?
Oakland Police Department Stunned by Day of Loss of three Officers in one day and one on life support.

OAKLAND, Calif. --
Bouquets of flowers from grieving residents were piled up at a growing memorial in front of the Oakland police department after its worst single day death toll.
Three officers were killed Saturday during separate confrontations with a 26-year-old parolee who relatives said feared returning to jail. A fourth officer was on life support.
"We lose officers about every 57 hours in this country," said Chuck Canterbury, president of the national Fraternal Order of Police. "But seldom do you have one of this magnitude."
Oakland had never lost even two officers in the line of duty on the same day. Flags at the state capitol were flown at half-staff Sunday. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger returned from Washington, D.C., to meet briefly with Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums and members of the police department.
Police said all four officers were shot Saturday by Lovelle Mixon, 26, of Oakland, a parolee who fled after shooting the first two officers following a traffic stop, then shot two more after a SWAT team entered an apartment in which he was hiding. Mixon was killed by officers, police said.
Take a quiet moment today to say a small prayer for these men and their families.

God bless every man and woman who has ever worn or ever will wear a uniform. They put their lives on the line each and every day to protect all of us, even the ones who have such blatant disregard for them. I have the utmost respect for every one of them, and I pray for the families of those lost this past weekend in CA.

Officer John Hege and Sergeant Mark Dunakin were shot and killed during a traffic stop at 74th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard. During the stop, the driver opened fire, killing Sergeant Dunakin and mortally wounding Officer Hege. Citizens who witnessed the incident called 911 and started CPR on both officers.
The suspect fled on foot, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of officers from the Oakland Police Department, California Highway Patrol and Alameda County Sheriff’s Department.
At approximately 3:30 pm the Oakland Police Department received an anonymous tip that the suspect was barricaded inside an apartment building on 74th Avenue.
Officers first attempted to negotiate with the suspect, but when that failed a SWAT team was sent into the location to apprehend the suspect. As the SWAT officers approached, the suspect opened fired with a rifle, killing Sergeant Ervin Romans and Sergeant Daniel Sakai, and wounding a third officer. Officers returned fire, killing the 26-year-old male suspect.
It was later determined that the suspect had an extensive violent criminal history and was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon. At the time of the incident he had a no-bail parole warrant.

Vigil Planned for Fallen Oakland, Calif. Officers

They took the other Officer off life support, the count just went to four of the Finest by scum that couldn't accept his punishment.
Organs donated by a slain Oakland, California, police officer saved four lives, and his donated tissue will enhance the lives of up to 50 others, the California Transplant Donor Network said Wednesday.
Officer John Hege, 41, was pronounced brain dead on Sunday but was kept on life support pending a decision on organ donation. He was the fourth Oakland officer to die after a gunman fired on police in two weekend incidents.
"Officer Hege was registered on the Donate Life California Organ and Tissue Registry, which his family also supports," the donor network said in a news release. "He chose in death as he did in life to help those in need. His organ donations saved the lives of four adult males from California."
Hege's liver, kidneys and heart were donated, the network said, and the transplants were successfully completed Tuesday and early Wednesday.
In a written statement, Hege's family said, "Our son John never met a stranger."
"John's courage and strength was enhanced by his ability to perceive the realities of life," the family said in the statement. "In June 2008, he registered on the Donate Life California Organ and Tissue Donor Registry. We completely and proudly support his decision, and it gives us a great deal of comfort to know that four individuals have received the gift of life because of our selfless and beloved John.
"Even in death he gave to the lives of those in our community whom he had always loved and supported."
Hege had been with the Oakland police force about 10 years.
The man accused of shooting the officers -- Lovelle Mixon, 26, of Oakland -- was fatally shot in a gun battle with SWAT officers in an apartment complex where he was hiding, police said. Authorities said Saturday night that Mixon had an extensive criminal history and was in violation of parole for assault with a deadly weapon.
The incidents began about 1 p.m. Saturday in east Oakland, when two motorcycle officers tried to pull over a car for a "fairly routine traffic stop," said Dave Kozicki, deputy police chief.
Emergency dispatchers received reports that two officers had been shot and needed help, he said. Those officers were Hege and Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, an 18-year veteran of the force. Dunakin died Saturday.
Police launched an intense manhunt to track down the gunman. An anonymous caller directed authorities to a building on an adjacent street where the man was believed to be barricaded, acting Police Chief Howard Jordan said.
The gunman fired on SWAT officers who entered the apartment, hitting two of them before police shot and killed the man, Jordan said. Those two officers -- Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35 -- died. Police said Romans had been with the department since 1996 and Sakai since 2000.
A fifth officer who was grazed by a bullet was treated at a hospital and released, police spokesman Jeff Thomason said Saturday.

Stacey Roberts, Lancaster Sheriff's Department
I had the pleasure of getting to know Stacey about 10 days before he died. He was a cool guy and a loss to his family and the Lancaster community. Keep his kids in your prayers. They have had so much to deal with. Their mother also passed away about a year earlier. Such a tragedy.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. B

New Orleans police Sgt. Manuel Curry, 84, believed to be the country's longest-serving, active-duty police officer working full time, died Thursday in New Orleans of medical complications following a hospitalization, police and friends said.
As a police officer, the lifelong Irish Channel resident served the city for 62 years, five months and four days.
Curry spent virtually his entire career in the 6th District. In 1966, he was promoted to sergeant and dispatched to the 3rd District, covering neighborhoods near Lake Pontchartrain, because police policy dictates that new supervisors can't command their former colleagues.
By the end of the year, then-Superintendent Joe Giarrusso gave what he called a Christmas gift to Curry -- a transfer back to his favorite district. Much later in his career, police officials gave him the honorary title of "Sergeant Major." He worked through Hurricane Katrina at the age of 80, sleeping some nights in a parked vehicle.
In 2004 Curry was part of a Louisiana delegation of veterans that took a 12-day trip to France to commemorate D-Day.

PARKLAND, Wash. (AP) - A gunman burst into a coffeehouse Sunday and opened fire on four police officers as they sat working on their laptops, killing the three men and one woman in what an official described as a targeted ambush.
It wasn't clear whether the officers even had time to draw their weapons to return fire, Troyer said.
"This was more of an execution. Walk in with the specific mindset to shoot police officers," Troyer said.
Troyer said the officers - all from the Lakewood Police Department - were catching up on paperwork at the beginning of their shifts when they were attacked at 8:15 a.m. Sunday.
Troyer said the attack was clearly targeted at the officers, not a robbery gone bad.

Police: Suspect in police deaths hurt, maybe dead
http://www.thestate.com/thebuzz/story/1048963.html
SEATTLE -- A suspect in the slaying of four police officers who were gunned down in a suburban coffee shop was surrounded by police at a Seattle house early Monday, wounded and possibly dead, police said.
Negotiators were trying to communicate with Maurice Clemmons, 37, using loudspeakers, explosions and even a robot to try to prod him from hiding. At one point, gunshots rang through the neighborhood, about 30 miles from the original crime scene.
"We have determined that in fact he has been shot," said Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff. "He may be deceased from his gunshot wound."

RALEIGH – Saturday, Raleigh police remembered 8-year-old honorary police officer William Bunn, who will be buried with full police honors.
Bunn had been battling neuroblastoma since 2007. He became an honorary officer after writing a letter to Raleigh's Mayor Charles Meeker expressing his dream of becoming a policeman.
Last month, Raleigh police made his wish come true. Chief Harry Dolan even gave Bunn his own badge to wear.
Lawmakers also honored his bravery by granting honorary membership in the State Senate.
Bunn's funeral was held at New Hope Baptist Church at the intersection of New Hope and Louisburg roads in Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, you can make a donation to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, St. Baldrick's Foundation.
Be at Peace Officer Bunn.

The suspect has been identified and is custody.
It all happened when the suspect crashed and Trooper Chadwick Lecroy responded.
When Lecroy got there, the two started fighting and things turned deadly.
"Shots were fired. Our trooper was struck multiple times and is deceased because of those wounds," said Georgia State Trooper Mark McDonough.
Lecroy was apparently shot in the face twice.
The suspect hopped into his squad car, ditching it several blocks away.
Police also found what they think is the murder weapon on the roof of a nearby apartment complex.
The Georgia State Patrol said Lecroy is the first trooper to be killed by gunfire in 35 years.
He leaves behind a wife and two sons.
Be at peace Trooper Lecroy.

Massachusetts Parole Board
Oct. 2008: Dominic Cinelli tells Massachusetts Parole Board he's a changed man.
<!-- /hmedia -->The Massachusetts Parole Board is under scrutiny after a local police officer was killed by a career criminal who was released despite serving a term of three concurrent life sentences.
Dominic Cinelli was serving time for shooting a security guard during an armed robbery to feed his heroin addiction when he told the board in November 2008 that he was a changed man, the Boston Globe reported.
Four months later the board unanimously voted to free Cinelli, but police say the 57-year-old returned to his ugly ways Sunday, fatally shooting Woburn police officer John Maguire, 60, while robbing a Kohl's department store. Cinelli also died in the shootout.
But critics say Cinelli isn't the only person to blame for Maguire's death.
"I don't know how any member of the Parole Board justifies that," Laurie Myers, president of Community Voices, a Chelmsford-based nonprofit that advocates on behalf of crime victims, told the Globe. "He shouldn't have been out, and now there's another person dead."

Cinelli had a lengthy rap sheet filled with armed robberies, assaults and other offenses, had been serving three life sentences since 1976, and had chronic disciplinary problems while in prison including two escapes during which he committed crimes, the Globe reported.
Still, he won the board over by saying the deaths in the family, including his mother's, and drug counseling changed him, the paper reported.
"When you hear that somebody who had been serving three life sentences is released on parole and commits another violent crime that causes the death of a police officer, that causes us great concern," Mark K. Leahy, president of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association and the Northborough police chief told the Globe.
John Grossman, the state's undersecretary of public safety and security, told the Globe that Gov. Deval Patrick (http://www.foxnews.com/topics/boston/politics/governor-deval-patrick.htm#r_src=ramp) ordered the Parole Board to review the decision.
"We're doing a complete look at what happened, and whatever amount of time it takes to do it right, we're going to take," he said.

Tiara Ellis Richard said Arlington officer Jillian Michelle Smith, 24, was shot by Barnes Samuel Nettles on Tuesday night as she sought to shield the girl from the 38-year-old man after he entered the apartment of Kimberly Deshay Carter, 29. After shooting Smith, Nettles shot Carter to death in a back bedroom, then returned to the living room, where he killed himself, Richard said.
"It appears (Smith) was moving in the direction of the child in an effort to protect her and, in that process, she was shot," Richard said, citing the girl's statement and forensic evidence.
Be at peace Off.Smith.
