I just had the semi-annual inspection of the heat pump, still under warranty, and the young technician came in after his preliminary inspection and showed me pictures of mold growing on the unit. He offered to sell me a special ultra-violet lamp that goes into the unit and kills germs. These things really do work.

My problem is that they cost (from this company, with which I am otherwise satisfied) $1200 and way up from there. Now I don't know everything, but I did know that I was looking at a picture of a grow-lite tube (or a tanning-bed tube) with a fixture to hold it. Total cost for parts maybe $50. I even looked up ready-to-use units for HVAC ductwork on the internet, and there were some for a little over $200 ready to plug in and start killin', with a couple of screws to hold it in place, and this was for up to 10,000 sq ft, a little bigger than my house. The technician didn't know all of this stuff, and I didn't blame him of course. But I am a little disappointed in the company. I know everybody has to make money, but this markup was a little on the greedy side.

If anybody is just the slightest bit handy with tools, this is one of many things that you can do yourself and save a bundle. You don't even need to pretend to be a electrician with some of these ready-made units. Just plug into an outlet.
