Toddler Left in Hot Car Dies; Car Temp 137 Degrees
(Chattanooga) - Every time the weather gets hot, we hear the same story. A baby left alone in a car.
“It makes me wanna cry. It’s so sad. How could they not know their child was in the car?” says Gina Genette, a concerned mother.
That story has a sad ending. Parents left a 15-month-old child in the back seat of a BMW for hours. Someone discovered the baby and called 911. By the time police arrived at the parking lot, the baby was dead.
Detective Toby Hewitt of the Chattanooga Police Department says, “clearly children and people of all ages need to be mindful of the heat. Especially in vehicles and confined spaces.”
“They should have known that child was in the car. Left out all day in the car, that is crazy,” says Gennette.
EMS workers escort a visibly shaken mother out of the building. Detectives on the scene used thermal imaging inside the car. The temperature reached 137 degrees.
Gennette says “no sympathy at all…none…for the child yes but for the parents, none.”

Galveston, TX) - A 19-year-old man is charged with microwaving his two-month-old daughter.
Joshua Mauldin called 9-1-1 and said he tripped and dropped a hot pot of water on the baby while staying at a hotel.
But after the baby was treated for third-degree burns on her face and hand, investigators said the injuries weren't consistent with his story. Instead, they believe the child was in the microwave for 10-to-20 seconds.
Mauldin could face up to 99-years in prison. His bond is set at $250,000.

You science types may know what a microtome is. When we need a super-thin slice of something to look at under the microscope, we mount a piece of tissue (muscle, skin, plant stem, whatever) in a chunk of hard wax, and then the microtome is bascially an incredibly sharp blade mounted in such a way that it can make the slices we need, down to less than one micron (one-tenth of a millimeter) in some cases.
I would recommend a full-body microtome series for this guy, starting with the soles of his feet with constant alcohol and saline irrigation. Set on slow.
Given the chance, I'd set it up myself.

It’s shocking when death comes at the hands of a caretaker — but more often, experts say, it is parents who kill their own children
http://www.thestate.com/156/story/75832.html
When young children are killed, more than half the time their parents are responsible.
I cannot possibly imagine a parent killing a child. I was working the night Susan Smith killed her children and remember broadcasting the BOLO (Be On The Lookout) for the vehicle and perp. I was horrified to learn later that she that had killed her own children.

TGIF, RSVP or even ASAP may sound familiar; however as computers have transformed communications a new dialect has emerged: Internet lingo. Acronyms or character symbols called Emoticons (mixing symbols to express emotions or moods) enable teens to communicate with others in a few keystrokes. While often just a convenient and quick means of communication, many teens use these acronyms and symbols to warn their friends when parents might be present and even to discuss drug use in a code that parents can’t decipher.
Instant messages, blog entries and text messages often look like Sanskrit to parents, but decoding this lingo used in digital communications is an important monitoring skill that should not be overlooked. Here is a quick guide to help you translate what teens are saying online and in their cell phone text messages. Keep in mind that, as with street names for drugs, these symbols and acronyms are subject to frequent change, particularly when those who use them suspect that others have figured out what they mean.

I've seen that, and on some level I guess it's kind of cute, sort of like the way we talked Pig Latin when we were kids. But overall it's kind of chilling. And what teachers are now finding in schools is that a lot of kids are having a hard time learning to write in English because they are so accustomed to the IM lingo.
My reply to that kid on the commercial: Take her phone until further notice, lock the computer AND the TV where she can't go, and have homework time every night with a non-electronic incentive PART of the time. (Not candy or ice cream, maybe a trip to the park.)
I actually had administrators tell me to use candy as an incentive for students to do classwork, which I didn't do, but so many other teachers did it so much that I had a lot of kids who WOULD NOT do any work because I wasn't giving out candy. They felt entitled to it, and this was in freakin' HIGH SCHOOL.

You know, every time I hear a story about any kind of dog attack, often but not always a pit bull or a Rottweiler, I think back to dogs of those breeds that I have known and I know that they can be raised to be perfectly fine, non-violent dogs if that's what the owner wants and is capable of.
BUT, the dogs in these stories were NOT raised well. Their owners either raised them to be violent or either had not the slightest idea of how to raise a dog, the latter being the case more often and JUST as dangerous as the former.
Folks, if you're going to raise a dog, go to some trouble to find out how to do it. It takes a lot of work, and if you're not willing to put that work into it, DON'T GET A FREAKIN' DOG! Most people I have known, and even now, either get a dog because they think that it makes THEM look good, like a camo shirt, or else they put the dog in the yard, sometimes on a chain, throw them table scraps and never pay them any attention otherwise. That way you are going to raise a BAD DOG, and you would deserve the responsibility for whatever that dog does. Which is, by the way, the law in SC for the last several years.
If you're not going to be responsible, you don't deserve a dog.

Parents get 5 years after boy tells police he and his sister had to take cocaine
http://www.thestate.com/news/story/122520.html
In a 5-year-old’s eyes, his parents’ greatest sin was stealing.
Living in the back seat of a green 1994 Buick — between mushed food in the seats and overturned drinks on the floorboard — the child was appalled that his parents would steal four food trays, dinner rolls and a half-gallon of tea from a Piggly Wiggly to feed them.
As for the “white medicine” he said his parents forced him and his sister to snort through a straw, all he knew about it was that it made his nose burn and his 2-year-old sister throw up.
I can't keep from crying over this, I have tears as I type. They need to terminate people like this, let them OD on the same junk they have been forcing this kids to take.

Father gets 19 years for sex with daughter
Testimony shows man had relations with daughter nearly 600 times in 4-year period
Assistant 11th Circuit Solicitor Larry Wedekind said the abuse began in December 2001 and continued through July 2005. The girl, now nearly 16, told police her father began having sexual contact with her when she was 11, staged a mock wedding and made her call him “hubby,” Wedekind said.
The man told his daughter the sex would end when she turned 15, but when the time came he refused to honor the agreement, Wedekind said. Instead, he suggested they have a child together. She then told her mother.

There is a strange and irrational notion about illegal and legal drugs that leads to unavoidable hypocrisy. The man who fell asleep after smoking pot and drinking beer would likely have done the same with only the beer. AND in either case he would have been guilty of reckless and unconscionable negligence while tending to a child.
The prisons are full with people convicted of simple possession, while drunks do unspeakable harm to their children and others every day. I cannot understand how our culture finds one chemical worth going to prison over and another one, which causes far more deaths and injuries from disease and accidents, legal, fit for deacons and the good folks in the neighborhood.
It's what they do while using that is criminal. Drunk driving, failure to look out for children, ruining families in general. Where is the sense of this?

Zoo Fuzz, I don't know what is going on in Lexington Co. But many rotten people are being caught and prosecuted in Lexington Co. So many times people look the other way when children are being abused because "don't want to get involved". Unfortunately there is more of this kind of abuse going on in our state than you hear about. I do not condone drinking either and still think it would be a big mistake to make drugs legal. Certainly mixing both can be fatal.

We don't place enough importance on the fact that children are very much in tune with being able to spot inconsistency and hypocrisy. This begins before they walk, but it doesn't stop there. As adolescents look around at the world in which they will live hopefully long lives, they see adults in the community buying alcohol at the grocery store. They also see their friends buying pot and smoking it. Then at some point they will see the drunks go along with their lives, unmolested by either the law or the standards of the community, while they will see those smoking pot go to jail. To make things worse, we still give them outrageously exaggerated warnings about what either one will do to them, and they recognize the lies right away. THE WHOLE POINT is that once we've lied to them about a particular subject, they won't believe us again, and indeed they would be fools if they did. After that the trust is broken, and any good we might have done is gone.
The same goes for sex. Of course abstinence is the best idea, but if that's all we're going to teach them it just doesn't do much good. Every study has shown that kids who have been exposed to abstinence programs start having sex on average just as early as those that were not exposed to such, even when they make a pledge about it. So if we're going to be disingenuous again, that translates into more unwanted babies and the cycle goes on forever.
You would be amazed if you knew how many adolescents and teenagers there are out there who truly don't know what causes pregnancy. Their parents don't teach them, and the schools are not allowed to teach them. It should be the parents, of course, but since that's not working, what are we to do? Anything?
There was a big hoopla on the news last night about some candidates advocating sex education for kindergartners. Surely nobody believes that anybody is going to teach 5-year-olds about condoms and STDs, but rather about how adults and others should touch them, and how they shouldn't. Again, it's the parents' job, but they aren't doing it, so pedophiles have a big edge that they don't need to have. What should we do then? Anything?
I believe that mass insanity has settled across the land. People in general are no longer able to protect even their own best interests. An awful lot of them have stopped any pretense of raising their children. I don't know if there's anything we can do, but we can at least stop making it worse.
PROTECT CHILDREN, even if you don't do anything else. If this sounds too preachy to you, then it's probably too late for you. Get out of the way.
