Don’t miss out on owl prowls

<!-- begin body-content -->CONGAREE NATIONAL PARK
About halfway through the owl prowls at Congaree National Park, visitors are asked to click off their flashlights and get very, very quiet.
And slowly a sensory overload builds. The stars grow brighter. The fireflies flicker more often. The crickets and frogs join in a deep-woods symphony.
It’s an amazing transformation everyone should experience, and you have 10 chances in the next four months.
The latest round of owl prowls begins Sept. 15 and runs every Friday through Nov. 3, with encore performances Nov. 17 and Dec. 1. They begin at 7:30 p.m. and last about two hours.
Hikers stay on the boardwalk. It’s ideal for kids, as long as they are up to walking for two hours and can handle the dark.
Like almost everything you can do at Congaree National Park, the owl prowls are free. But you have to reserve a spot, and the prowls fill up quickly.
You can reserve a spot up to two weeks ahead of a prowl by calling (803) 776-4396.

In a classic meeting of Halloween and science, the folks at Congaree National Park plan a spider survey on Oct. 28, and they want your help.
Researchers from Clemson and the National Park Service are taking an inventory of the spider species in the 24,600-acre park in southeastern Richland County. They’re asking for “citizen scientists” to help them cover as much of the park as possible.
Participants will be trained to use scientific equipment and taught basic spider identification. Spider sessions will run from 9 a.m to noon, 1 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. (Yep, the last session requires walking through the swamp in the dark.)
If you’re interested, call David Shelley at (803) 776-4396, extension 15. Volunteers should contact the park by Friday so the spider patrol will know how many helpers to expect.

An evening of South Carolina ghosts, ghouls, and legends from two museums!
At the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, guides take you on a spooky journey through the museum where you will experience costumed interpretations of the most unusual and hair-raising tales associated with the collection. Watch out for frights and surprises around every corner.
Then continue your “haunted” tour at the State Museum. The museum’s ghostly guides weave chilling tales such as the Gray Man of Pawley’s Island, the Lowcountry Boo Hag and “Bubba,” the headless museum ghost!
The ghouls and ghosts of the museums will be out in full force on October 24 and 26, 2006. Tours are every half hour from 6:00-9:00. Tickets are available in advance (803-737-8095) or at the door - $20 adults, $10 children 12 and under, State Museum members $15 and $5.
