Sheriff Little
01-20-2006, 05:11 PM
Damn you Dukes! You absolutely right though, I'm out for blood! See in my county, we don't have all the bickering about who's in whose jurisdiction. We're all out for one thing...to remove the bad guys from the streets. Of course, all of the local police in my county have been through my training school, so they are by far some of the most superior law enforcement officers in the country.
When you're in a place like Pelion or Gaston, where the departments are inferior, you have to complain about a more superior force like Swansea, though. You want every opportunity to look good, even though you end up looking stupid with all the whining.

01-21-2006, 08:09 AM
I think mutual aid between the small town police forces is a great idea. This helps the county with it's cost of patroling rural areas and should give some relief to the HP. Now what I would like to know is what is the recommended level of law officer per area population? How many law officers are there in Lexington county? Add up anyone who has a badge and firearm. All the small towns, game wardens, airport police, armed security guards, marshalls, LCSD, highway patrol and anyone else I've missed, and divide that by the population of the county. Do we have enough or to many?

better days
01-21-2006, 08:17 AM
You have to admit the sound of blue ticks and red bones chasing cars and barking would add a nice southern flavor to Swansea. If you could break them from hunching and licking themselves in public I'm all for it.

cuebald
01-21-2006, 10:28 AM
You may be onto something, BD. And when deer season closes, you ought to be able to find plenty of volunteeers to deputize who would LOVE to have a reason to stand along the shoulders of the road all day with pump guns full of #1 buckshot to wait on lawbreakers. The hounds make a great sountrack for it

They'd enjoy it. Get 'em away from the honey-do stuff and pretend they're doin' 'portant stuff.

And they might do a better job than the regulars.

(Swansea) February 6, 2007 - Last month, a two-year-old girl was murdered Swansea. We've learned that in the midst of that investigation, Swansea's police chief has resigned.
But the town's mayor says Chief Ben Spence's decision to quit has nothing to do with the case. Mayor Ray Spires tells News 10 that Spence turned in his resignation Monday.
Spence had been leading the probe into last month's murder of two-year-old Jalah Peeples, and the wounding of her parents.
Officials say two masked men went to the Elm Creek Apartments in Swansea looking for James Peeples. During a gunfight, Peeples and his girlfriend, Laura McMichael, were wounded. Their daughter Jalah was caught in the crossfire and killed.
No arrests have been made. Spence has not been available for comment.
Spires says Spence had indicated he was interested in farming. But the mayor says town officials had no idea the chief was about to resign.
Assistant Chief Clif Hayes has been named interim chief.

This is an interesting turn of events after saying last week that he would do everything in his power to find the killers of the 2 year old girl.

Here's the way it works. There is a shortage of cops nationwide. There are plenty of applicants, but once they go through the training, the drug tests, the psychological screenings, etc, there are not enough left, and every one that does succeed at the Police Academy has got his/her choice of many jobs. Usually, not always, the top graduates of the academy go to the larger towns. They get better pay, better benefits, and room for advancement. By the time you get to small departments like Swansea, you have to take what's left or do without. I'm not saying that it should be that way, but it is.

Then, after they start, an awful lot drop out after the first few years. It's just too much stress, too much danger, too much responsibility for the money they get paid. Yes, some take the path of becoming crooks themselves, not most, but some. And where would you expect that to be most likely? In the departments that pay the most or the ones that pay the least?

Now of course there are some small departments that work like Mayberry on the Andy Griffith Show. Maybe it's a really good and capable cop who just prefers a small town. But these would be the exceptions, not the rule.

Unfortunately we keep finding out that there are more and more things that money CAN buy. Justice and law enforcement and good teachers should not be among those things, but......what can you do?

Just yesterday I was talking with a former deputy from Orangeburg. He left to become an electronics technician, gets paid probably more than twice what he was making as a cop, doesn't get shot at, works regular hours. And I think it's safe to say that he was not having the peaceful and gratifying small town cop experience where he was.

I say to prospective cops the same as I say to prospective teachers anymore. DON'T DO IT! Find some other way to make a living. With-hold your services from organizations that are so screwed up that nobody could make them work. Seriously. There no reason to screw up life for yourself AND your family just because the public is apparently happy with crooked office-holders. If nothing else, you owe your family better than that. Sure, somebody's got to do it, but let it be somebody else. I would not steer you wrong.

And on a related subject, ANOTHER friend of mine now has a kid who will be going to DJJ. Again from a two-parent family, both parents with Master's degrees and successful, extremely capable at school until the eighth grade when he just quit trying. But a lot of kids in his small-town neighborhood were basically thugs, and he was drawn to that. So he's probably lost. If he's not in a gang already, he'll have to join one within a few days or he won't survive DJJ. I gave this kid private instruction related to a course he was taking online. Smart, very smart. And good manners. But got to go with the popular culture, soundtracked with music that promotes violence and/or self-destruction. It makes me sick.

After 9-11 the feds just gave money away for homeland security. These small town Police departments starting popping up. Now I'm just making a wild guess but I assume the money was mis-spent or out right stolen in clever ways. The town police officers now must learn to work, uncertain of what the next day brings. The town council from the mayor and all members should be held accountable and face possible jail terms, and what's the real reason for the police chiefs leaving suddenly?

FBI agent testifies Gangsta Killer Bloods involved in deadly attempted robbery

By ADAM BEAM

abeam@thestate.com

A 2-year-old Swansea girl killed in a shootout in January was the victim of an attempted robbery by the Gangsta Killer Bloods, according to an FBI agent’s courtroom testimony Thursday.
The testimony connects for the first time one of the Midlands’ most heinous crimes with the highly organized gang, which has national ties.

They are terrorists, like any other terrorists, and should be dealt with as such.

I worry as much as anybody about preserving civil rights, but civil rights were never meant for people who do things like this. It's like there's a disease sweeping across the country and we're not going to do the right thing because we're such nice people?

Did you see those guys that had babies (2 and 5) smoking dope? Not only did they have no idea why they shouldn't, one of them has given an interview saying that it's no big deal, that everybody does it. I know from working with the most hopeless kids in the state, they don't care about their own lives, so caring about somebody else's is just not something they can comprehend.

Frak that!

Technically there is no need to ask the mayor or any of his friends. That decision would have to come from the ABC board of South Carolina. So no matter who may object (former politicians, myself or whomever), there is not a whole lot that the town can do about it since the giving of liquor & beer licenses is not up to the town, but the state.

I do not see what the big deal is things will sort out most likely, either it will be a problem and the cops will put an end to it or he will have no patronage. I dont see why mr "fasttimes" wont do ok. That being said I do not care for the owner at all. Swansea is the closest thing there is in SC to a "dry" town. There is not one place in town you can eat a dinner and have a glass of wine or a shot of whiskey. We did have the Tai resteraunt but they are "closed" for repairs.

Personally I don't see what the big deal is...At least it is a business that is open in Swansea. While yes, some people may not like it, at least it is a start. While walking through town over the weekend, I noticed that there are signs posted on his door stating the age limit (which was a concern of mine.) Like him or not, give the man a chance. At least he is trying to creat some revenue in this town.

Everybody has basic rights, usually until they CHOOSE to give them up by committing a serious crime or other such behavior. Then they often lose their most basic rights, such as freedom.

We all give up some rights in small ways all the time. For an example when you are on public school property you give up your fourth amendment rights (meaning you and your property can be searched without probable cause) and, to a large extent you give up your first amendment rights. There is a sign next to the front door of most schools that makes these rules very clear.

Free speech has never been absolute. Malicious speech leading to violent crime is not protected, nor is sexual speech in most public places. Then there's slander, libel, words I never heard in the bible.

What is so wrong with the pool hall in swansea on main street. it is a very nice & clean business. The owners went through all the correct legal means of obtaining a beer & wine permit form the state. They ran the legal ad in the lexington county chronicle, the state paper for three weeks. Sled posted the business for the required time for eveyone to see, and the owners also made it known to the public. Longnecks followed all the rules & obtained the beer & wine permit in the way the department of revenue required. The town of swansea has nothing to do with it.

The owner also spoke at the town meeting informing the town of what the plan was for his business. so i feel like they done more than most of the other bars in lexington county has done.

The owner has always wecome police into the business without a problem .

So the way i see it , many people has a pool table in their home and they drink beer . So whats the problem with trying to bring business to the downtown area in swansea.

New life is what we need in the downtown business district. We need a younger group in this area since most of the other business on the street only attracts the older people that dont want anything in town to change.

Please people get a life tend to your own business and let the people in town who are trying to make a difference do it .

Botton line if you dont like Longnecks Billiards & Beer Bar - you dont have to go in it. :butthead:

What does any of this have to do with the police? Longnecks is a really nice place from what I have seen. All this fuss over a good business in a town? If yall think that is bad, what about the store just feet away that sells some questionable items? That is a business to fuss about.

cuebald
03-27-2007, 04:29 AM
Let me suggest - if a business offends you, don't shop there. Shop with those stores that reflect your values. If enough people don't shop there, it will go away in short order.

If it doesn't go away, it means you were outvoted, and not everyone thinks like you. Deal with it.

o please people get a life - The pool room on main street is quite nice it would compare to something you may find in a larger city such as Lexington or Columbia. I have been in there and know the owners. They are very nice and so is the busiess. What other business in town offers you a place for enjoyment with all the tv's , music and pool. I see no problem with a place like this in Swansea. We should be thankful that he left it in Swansea and did not move it away . Than we would have another empty building in town . Please people if you give them a chance it should be great for the town . Like i said i have been in there and it is the best looking business in this town . Three cheers for the owners of Longnecks and what they have done to the old building >Great job guys!!!!
