I had to put my cat down Monday afternoon due to cancer. He was on the so-called "Wellness Plan" that Banfield Pet Hospital advocates (which by the way doesn't save you that much money). I recently called them to find out what the procedure is to cancel the plan since my dear beloved child has passed on. They tell me that to cancel I either have to pay for the discounts I had already received from the plan or pay for the remainder of the plan. So now I have to pay $19.95 a month until September when my poor cat is not even around (btw they misdiagnosed him as having diabetes when it was cancer). They have absolutely NO sympathy when you lose an animal. I will not bring my second cat nor my other animals to them ever again. Anyone have suggestions for other vet?

We've been very happy with Sunset Animal Clinic, near Lexington Medical Center.

As for these people wanting you to keep paying, let them know that you're willing to make some noise about it. A letter to the editor in the paper might be a good thing to bring up. The possibility of suing over the misdiagnosis might be worth mentioning, but in reality it would be difficult because you would have to prove negligence and in the end all you would be entitled to in SC is the "price" of a cat, whatever that's supposed to mean.

Make some noise and hint that you would drop it if they drop their contract with you. If it were me, I wouldn't pay it and see how far they are willing to go. But I can't advise you to do that because I don't know the details of the contract, plus I'm not a lawyer.

But I will certainly help get the word around about Banfield.

Thank you for the advice and for spreading the word Swampfox! Sunset Animal Clinic is on Sunset Blvd right?

Yeah, if you're coming from Lexington, you cross over the interstate there at the hospital, go through one light and turn right IMMEDIATELY after the McDonalds. This is Professional Drive, and it's hard to see. It looks like another entrance to McDonalds. Sunset Animal Clinic is at the end of this street. (About 2 blocks distance.)

I too would recommend Sunset. I few month back we had to have our cat put to sleep due to cancer. Dr. Foy was great. While it was a heart wrenching decision (we must have been in the room for well over an hour) he would check on us to see how we were. Once we decided to do the inevitable, the entire staff was awesome. They even let us leave out of the back door which was great because we must have looked like a bunch of blubbering idiots. Having had animals my entire life, it was the first time I have had to put one to sleep, and it was gut wrenching. Dr. Foy, Dr. Brown and their staff made it much more bearable.

My only other experience with them was an emergency visit as our dog nicked an artery in her foot. Being new to the area, I called several closer clinics and was told they were not taking "new patients" or they wouldn't be able to see her until the next day. (Duh...she was bleeding to death.) Sunset took her in immediately, did emergency surgery, kept her overnight and the bill was under $100.
I can empathize with you for your loss, I am just thankful that I didn't have to go through what you went through with your vet.

We've used Sunset Animal clinic since late 1999 and have nothing but good things to say about them. They even stayed open an extra half hour so we could bring in our recently deceased cat for disposal (Can't bury them on your own property anymore in Cayce, WTH?) and they were very compassionate with us. Even sent a condolence card. Great folks, you won't be disappointed.

I've been taking my brood to Greggs Animal Hosp on Two Notch and I-77 for 4 years now and am very satisfied with their care and their hours. I have 6 dogs, down from 7 when my 17 yo ShihTzu passed away. They gave excellent care to this elder dog and to my remaining diabetic shih-tzu. They have done teeth extractions, treated allergies in my 170lb St. Bernard, and overall are wonderful with all of them. When I rescued a golden this last Sept he apparently had a case of the canine flu, which was just starting to be recognized, and they treated it quickly. They also take time with the pet and with me - they don't run their office on a 'get em in, get em out' basis.

A side note, I have heard from several people that taking their pets to either the Barking Lot or Critter Cabin has resulted in their animals coming home with Kennel Cough. Before you take your pet somewhere to get groomed make sure they have their KC vaccination!

Ahem.....While we are talking about pets. Would anyone like to have a female chocolate lab named Hersey. She is about 4yrs. old. Not neutered. The owner does not know where her papers are. She belonged to his adult son. The dog is being neglected in that no one gives her any attention or plays with her. I would love to take her but I have a border collie. I would really like to see this dog go to a very good home. Labs are wonderful pets and are very loving and wonderful with children. If interested send let me know. I'll get you in touch w/the owner.

I'll contribute a 20 year old with some mechanical inclination.

He knows how to open a refrigerator door and work an X-box. Any takers?

I'd rather have the dog. At least they don't talk back. Much.
